To be posted Into pcgamers letterbox for bashing steam :D

1. Direct Content delivery means i dont have to go to town to buy my games.

2. It confuses the hell out of my brother, which is fun to watch :p

Seriously:

2. Anti-piracy :D

3. I don't have any friends, but thankfully the Friends network is always down, so i'm rarely reminded of the fact.

4. Although I uninstalled Half Life 2 and checked off "Do not automatically update this game," it still "kindly" downloads it in case I feel like playing the whole thing over again

5. Handy when it comes to mods, also wonderful with updates and patches.

The big ones..

5. Automatic updates

6. Delivers new, free content

Haha, good one. :)

7. Steam is not spamming you too much with news that you have no use of knowing about what-so-ever.

8.) direct content delivery system cuts out the middle man, allowing valve to invest more money into future projects. as gamers, we win.

9. Rarely crashes, but when it does u will learn how to manage Regedit.

10. Scares away and tourtures the dial-up users, which eliminates the lag in games.

the steam is unhackable?

no steam is very hackable...

1. content delivery
2.the fact that it's not just for valve
3.d/l can be insanly fast reaching 2 mb a sec or 3 at some points.
2Mbps is really slow...

Actually, it's not when it comes to downloading files. I usually get 300/400 kb/sec when I download from a site like Cnet.

Are you talking about kb or KB?
I get like 350KB/s from cnet...
And about 2Mb/s from steam...
2Mb/s is only like 250KB/s...

from what i've heard steam has little weight against someone determined to hack the game, although it stops your average joe putting the ISO's on supernova with a cd key.

for me the auto updates is the only feature i really use, friends never works and now steam is having issues with my computer, it's not loading in the taskbar at startup although the process is running, and when i shut down it come up with "end now" for the play games window, even when the play games window isn't open, neither is steam showing in the taskbar - annoying to say the least. is it worth it? at the moment i'm undecided, if anything else goes wrong i'll be a bit pissed off though:( - it started off so well

Are you serious? I never knew that! Thanks.

Yea.. steam really doesnt do much for security..
I just finished d/ling CSS off of bt for a friend..

pfft, bits and bytes...

Divide by 8 to get the bytes (8 bits in a byte)

if you have a 2mbit line, divide 2000 by 8 to get the maximum speeds you should expect.

MB/S is megabytes per second, MBPS is megabits per second. Same with K's.

I dont think its the / or p that makes the difference.. its the capital B or lower case b...

My reasons for loving steam:
1. Don't have to worry about patches
2. Don't have to worry about parents not driving me to the store at 3 AM when HL2 is released
3. Makes loading mods painless.

mbps is always megabits, mb/s is always megabytes.

I am aware of something involving big 'B' and little 'b' so you're probably right there, I've just never seen it like that before, its always been mbps and kb/s. etc

sorry for the hijack, back on topic.... steam sucks. It's like a dictatorship on gameplay.

I hate steam :| , it's intrusive (runs on startup without asking), requires and internet connection, content servers cripple under stress, requires auth every time you play the game (cd version), takes up uneeded memory (barely anything but i'm a picky bastard). Ruins peoples hl2 experience if they have a sloppy net connection. Good on paper, terrible in execution.

(sry had to say it)

Steam can download like up to 3 megabytes a second which is fast as shit. Ive clocked my top speed of downloading at 1.5 megs/second. That is 1500 kilobytes a second. Which is pretty fast when compared to the fact that my cable internets top speed is 3000 kb/sec. and you will never get close to 1500 kb/s from websites. I love the Steam servers, they are superfast if you've got the connection.

1. Looking for a server without running the game or a fatass gamespy arcade.
2. Automatic updates
3. Easy to use
4. Friends list is good, when it works.
5. You can get your own skins to give it bling bling.

Babyheadcrab, you can turn off "Start on startup" ya know..

(Btw people, if you dont have a real reason to dislike steam, dont, cus hating on it no longer makes you look cool :o)

Thats not my point :p , The fact is when you first install it it assumes you want it to run itself on startup and I simply cant stand it when programs do that. It's almost like it considers itself supirior to other programs and so it must show you itself when you boot it unless you uncheck a box :( reminds me of msn messenger.

I locked my startup registry keys so programs can't do that :-/
It was especially helpful cuz i couldnt get quicktime to stop adding itself

how does one do this?

If you have XP you can just right click the startup keys in the registry, go permissions, advanced, edit, then click deny for set value and create subkeys.

thanksyou :smoking:

#whatever - doesn't care if you have a download cap >_>

Easy to disable, but I see your point being a 56ker.

requires and internet connection

That's the whole point... you can play single player games without it if you've authed them.

HL2? No it doesn't. Doesn't even require the CD. Run it in offline mode.

As mentioned above, I'm 56k and have had no problems. Even the patches are quick.

Features a great data-backup system that allows you to put entire games downloaded off of steam onto CD's. Very usefull if you want to download the game but only have a 56k connection, just download at a friends house and burn the game onto a CD.

25) cause it goes down all the time, which makes you remember WON...

Steam has never gone down as long as I've used it (since sometime around august, I believe).
