Two enormous, gamma-ray-emitting structures are bubbling out of the center of our galaxy. And astronomers have no idea what caused them.

These bubbles, which stretch an astonishing 25,000 light years above and below the galactic plane, are invisible to the naked eye. But astronomers working with data from the Fermi space telescope, which detects gamma rays, were able to see the structures. Though our galaxy is bathed in a light haze of gamma rays, these structures stood out sharply - gamma rays were zooming out of them at a tremendous rate, and the bubbles also appeared to have sharply defined edges.

galaxy got big balls of gamma!

"you wont see bigger balls than these"

RJMC should know as he's seen a lot of balls; big ones, little ones, brown ones, black ones...

Silly scientists! Everybody knows aliens/god did it!!!11

They don't know what causes giant gamma ray bursts? Why don't they think about the possible supermassive black hole (or holes) that pump out gamma ray bursts all the time? If this is a common thing imagine how scary it would be when galaxies collide. Any habited planets in the way of the top or bottom of the core would get blasted all to hell... assuming it's a gamma ray burst on the magnitude of what a black hole or neutron star action.

I think the point is that the gamma rays are being emitted from every point inside these giant spheres, not just the black hole in the centre.

No, shhh! Random internet layman always knows better than professionals, in all fields.

I was just actually looking at this article and realized I posted in here.

One possibility includes a particle jet from the supermassive black hole at the galactic center. In many other galaxies, astronomers see fast particle jets powered by matter falling toward a central black hole. While there is no evidence the Milky Way's black hole has such a jet today, it may have in the past.

So that's basically what I said. Supermassive black hole in center of galaxy has gamma ray burst. But having not read the article I assumed it was still happening. Anyways I guess the "Random internet layman" guessed the same as the professionals, in this field. Time for me to move on to the rest of the world and figure things out like the people who get paid to!

You seemed to think you were the only one who had thought of it, was my point, and since you didn't see any other mention of it at first glance obviously everyone else was dumb.

From the original post... to which I replied... with a response of disbelief... that astronomers couldn't figure it out.

But yes, everyone else is dumb :D

Exactly what I was thinking, you get a thread on speculation in the universe that not even the experts can figure out, and people come on thinking they have an idea, it is rather hilarious.

Because we're not just doing it for fun here, we're actually trying to come up with sound scientific theories and not just having a fun discussion on the internet. It also seems that the experts agree with StarBob, so your point is moot.

Well, for me the funny part is when people say "why haven't they thought of this," or "why aren't they researching this."

They have. They are. They're ****ing scientists.

Every one of these threads, I swear.

... did you expect something more mature from a thread that was started using a testicles joke?

I really should have addressed the both of them. I'm not sure though. Maybe sometimes their childish bickering could be interesting? SOMEONE HAS TO BE THE BIGGER MAN HERE. And I'm not talking about PENIS.

Man I'm never posting on a thread's article quote ever again. I'm going to either skip it entirely or read the entire damn article before I say anything... because even if what I say it's perfeclty in line with the conclusions reached by others, I'll be flamed to hell and back for stating it.
