Does anyone know of an easier way to assign parts of a model to a bone? I absolutely cannot get the hang of the envelopes. It seems like you should just be able to select the vertices you want. Is there a way to do this?
 
Yea there is. Once you have added some bones you will be able to tick the little box named vertices. Now when you put on edge faces you will be able to see and select the verts. Then hit the little spanner tool, this will give you a small floating tool box which is full of vert specific weighting tools such as assign weights 0 - 1 click buttons and it also shows the bones are assigned to including there values. There are also tools to put weight values manuly, bascily type them in.

This is for 3d max btw i dont know what tool your using as you havnt make it clear. Hope it helps. There is also a link to a video from the audodesk website which may give you some more ideas of what you can do.
