A few Garry's mod questions...

Well since the FAQ thread is locked and i cant post there i made this thread because i have a few questions...

Im actually new here and didnt really make a good first impression, but ive been a half life fan for only a short while now and desided to join the site to ask some questions ect ect.

Ive seen alot of this gmod and it seems cool... but i dont have half life 2 on my pc so i cant download it. Since i live in south africa i cant buy it on steam and internet is a big problem here (yeah i know... internet) So ive desided to download gmod 9 free, all i need now is a source engine game, eg. HL2, CS:S.

Okay now about the gmod...:

The NPC's in gmod - Do i get all of them once i get gmod or does ot depend on the game i have, eg. TM2 (the medic, pyro ect) or HL2 (alyx, eli, kleiner) ???
Same for the props and everything else....

For gmod 9 you have to get HL2 and CS:S to be able to run it , you only get Hl2 npcs anyway , you cant spawn npcs from Ep1 and 2 and no , you cannot spawn TF2 characters as npcs. And props you can spawn depend on what games you have.
 
okay thanks, but if i happen to have portal aswell, would i have that NPC's and props too ??

Seeing ur so helpful and all... here's another irritating question:

Ive seen alot of these pics of other guys using gmod (10, right?) and been wondering if i can download add-ons for it, it true, right?

Eg. the pic below

While you can download add-ons for it (although it might be pretty hard to find some for gmod 9) that guy doesnt seem to be running any add-ons.
 
So... no add-ons for 9 (if i cant find some) and alot of add-ons for 10.. aww man :(
 
Why not get Gmod ten anyway? Its alot better than Gmod nine and its getting updated (unlike gmod nine which is no longer supported).

even if i get v 10.... how big will it be ?

You can use credit cards and PayPal as well as other methods, and the download size is under 100MB i believe.
 
^ this , and its definatly worth it. Lots to do in it , way more than V9.
 
okay thanks alot guys... first ill get 9 and if i like it (which i know i will) ill maybe get 10 :)

And it's $10 to buy Gmod through Steam last time I looked, it's not really a bank breaking decision!
 
Well ive joined just a short time ago and been scanning the forums, so i noticed on the 'Post your G-Mod pic here' some pics of the gmod 9 and it doesnt seem that lame
 
Any idea where i can get 9?? ive searched on google but im not sure if those are the 'real deal' ...

The big files in games are things like textures, models, maps, sounds, etc. Since GMod9 uses HL2 and CSS's content it doesn't have to be big. The file has probably been compressed too.

Chell isn't an NPC. But yeah Portal gives you here ragdoll (Gmod 10 only).
 
Well... what do u know.... another question *ding ding ding*

Since almost every VALVe game is on Steam.. i was wondering if i need to be logged onto steam everytime i want to play gmod (since it says something about a steam list)?
 
Have you been playing GMod 9 without Steam?

GMod 10 being a Steam game does require Steam to be running to play.

Okay - ive finally got CS:S and downloaded the GMOD 9 thingy.... what now?
Do i have to launch it from Steam or something? cause i cant go on Steam right now :frown:

edit: do i have to download a update for steam everytime i go on it?
 
you click on Garry's Mod 9 in your My Games list.
no you don't have to download an update for steam everytime you log on, only when there are updates do you need to update.
 
it pains me everytime i post here, knowing that a noob like me taking all of your precious time...

but anyway - i have another question:

As we all know, steam is a internet-eater (for me, not u lucky guys) and i wanted to know if i have to log onto steam everytime i want to play gmod? also - < if so... it can be started in offline mode, right? but everytime i click on 'Start in offline-mode' it wont start... in offline-mode. any reasons why?
 
No, if your internet connection is disabled... it'll automatically start in offline mode.
 
but it gives some kind of error...

cant remember what it is but it said something about...

Start GMod
Exit GMod
In Steam go File->Go Offline
Hope for the best
 
the error says:

'could not connect to steam nekwork. it could be something to do with
your internet connection. go to www.steampowered.com for more info.'

thats what it more or less says...

I started steam and then in File i clicked 'Go offline' - then it says something about restarting steam offline, after that - it shows a window "connecting xxxxx profile" (or something) and then showing the error above ^^^
 
thanks for the links man... it really helped. i had to change a few settings in steam ;)

btw - i can now start steam offline without that error *yeah*

im new here and i have a question about gmod:
i open the files for gmod to be installed but then it asks for a password for gmod to be installed any ideas?:p
