So Im a little stumped...

I loved HL2, but having finished with it, and not playing any mods at the mo, all I am playing is CSS.

Problem is that the valve directory in my program files is 5.6 gig.

So, simple question really - how can I strip it down to the bear essentials? All the functionality I want is CSS.

Much thanks

Delete the .gcf cache files in your C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps folder

In my folder I have everything Valve has officially released on Steam (including Half-Life and Opposing Force). Deleting all these caches will free up nearly 5GB on my drive. That would leave me with 3.29GB that's required for Counter-Strike: Source

Is it possible to delete uninstalled game links in the Play games box?

Isn't it probably better to uninstall the games from Steam itself?

Right click on the game name in Play Games, go to properties, delete local game content. That way, you can't accidentally delete anything you need.
