Does anyone on this forum read George RR Martin's series? I just finished the third book "A Storm of Swords" a few days ago and I'm really engrossed in the story.

From the wiki:
The books are known for complex characters, sudden and often violent plot twists, and political intrigue. In a genre where magic usually takes center stage, this series has a reputation for its limited and subtle use of magic, employing it as an ambiguous and often sinister background force.[2] Finally, the novels do not (presently) center around a climactic clash between "Good" and "Evil;" plot lines have revolved primarily around political infighting and civil war, with only one or two storyline arcs even suggesting the possibility of an external threat.

The novels are narrated from a very strict third person limited omniscient perspective, the chapters alternating between different point of view characters. Martin's treatment of his characters makes them extremely hard to classify: very few can be labeled as "good" or "evil". The author also has a reputation of not being afraid to kill any character, no matter how major.

HBO is also planning on making the books into a miniseries which also sounds good. Notibably the HBO and miniseries part.

I still need to finish the first one, I got it like a year ago :p.

But I do love what I've read. Just keep getting sidetracked with other books and things. I can't wait to see what HBO does with it.

French Ninja, I am the hugest fan you'll find on these boards!

I love the series, and can't wait for the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons, to come out. Unfortunately George R.R. Martin is the Valve of fantasy literature. Release dates and him don't mix.

The last half of ASOS is a roller-coaster of sudden deaths, plot twists, and battles. I was the guy who initially announced the HBO series here. I think me, DeusExMachina, and Krynn72 are the biggest fans. Goes without saying that I recommend this to everyone (I managed to get two of my friends hooked).

So...them Westerosi weddings are deadly ain't they?

*Rides into the thread*

FOR TARGARYEN!

*starts slaughtering*

Awesome series. I read it after the thread mentioned above, or the one before that perhaps.

I think the book was supposed to be released in January or somewhere around there originally. Oh well, it'll be worth the wait to see what happened to Davos and everyone else.

Davos better not be dead.

His plot twists are pretty damn good. I absolutely didn't see the Red Wedding or what happened to the queen at the conclusion of book #4 coming

Indeed. Awesome stuff.

Yep, I am a huge fan. I even started playing the pen and paper rpg (online though) after realizing that Martin is going to take his sweet ass time on the next book.

So...them Westerosi weddings are deadly ain't they?

Indeed. Awesome stuff.

I am so freaking stoked to see what HBO pulls off with the series. So stoked in fact that I am trying to find out if they are using CG and seeing if the company the outsource it to will hire me :)

My response to the Red Wedding:
Hmm..."The Raines of Castamere"?.....What? WHAT?! *Stands up* WHAT?!?!?!? DAMN YOU HOUSE FREY! DAMN YOU AND YOUR FERTILE LOINS WALDER FREY! *throws book at wall and start screaming...at 2 in the morning*

and to a certain trial:
Yeah! Take that Gregor Clegane!....WHAT?! NO! WHY?! #@&%!#!!!!

I am so freaking stoked to see what HBO pulls off with the series. So stoked in fact that I am trying to find out if they are using CG and seeing if the company the outsource it to will hire me
They better not make Tyrion a comic relief character like Peter Jackson did to Gimli. He's my favorite character.

And as far as auditioning goes...
Short Recoil for Gregor Clegane!

Haha, oh that trial of combat! lol. Are there any legal proceedings in Westeros that don't end in the words "I demand...TRIAL BY COMBAT!"

I knew something bad would happen. Prince Oberyn ganks Ser Gregor, he's down, Oberyn starts doing his ass-kicking speech, then I think, "Oh Jesus, he's monologuing, you know what that means!" And lo and behold Gregor Clegane crushes his head like a ripe melon. If the HBO series gets to its third season, I demand that one of you capture that exact frame of film and simply inscribe PWND on the bottom.

As to those delightful marriages:

There are exactly four points where I have actually yelled at the book: "What the...you f***ing little s***head Joffrey you beheaded NED!? Oh, it is on now!" "Hahaha, die you little f***ing little s***head Joffrey, yes, yes, choke on your pigeon pie!" "Oh well, Jon Snow's screwed now...wait, who're those horsemen...wait, a flaming heart...holy crap...STANNIS IS HERE TO SAVE MOTHERF***ING DAY," and finally "Most embarassing takedown EVER" after a certain incident involving a inconveniently-placed whore, an easily-accessible crossbow, a diarrhetic old man, and an irate dwarf. Curiously, I wasn't too shocked (relatively) by the Red Wedding. Hell, I was more worried about Arya and Sandor getting killed outside than what was going on in the feast hall.

Oh, and have you been following the updates? GRRM has been reading chapters at conventions. Far and away the most ass-kicking scenes related are the Asha Greyjoy sex scene that we've been waiting for since Book 2 and the Prologue, which is told from the perspective of Varamyr Six-Skins, the warg serving Mance Rayder.

Oh, and also, in a fight between Chuck Norris and Steven Seagall, do you know who wins?

Sandor Clegane would, while simultaneously avoiding getting stabbed in the back by Arya Stark, catching her swooning sister, and drinking heavily.

If we base chivalry on number of fair damsels rescued, Sandor "The Dog" Clegane is the most heroic character in the whole damn series.

In conclusion: Sandor for President.

He wouldnt be too good in crisis situations though, because they usually involve fire.

I hope they dont use any big name actors. It would ruin the feel for me. But it seems like HBO doesnt use many bigtime actors. From what I saw of Band of Brothers and ROME.

Gentlemen, this has already been decided by a massive collaborative effort: http://www.geocities.com/asoiafcasting/ I might not quite agree with all the casting, but most of it is sound. Oh, and if we were to hire all these actors, their collective salary would approach 1 billion American dollars.

By far the most inspired casting is Hayden Christensen as Ser Waymar Royce, the incompetent Ranger from the Book 1 Prologue...I think you can guess why...;)

In regards to Sandor's crippling pyrophobia...well, he has a pretty compelling reason...damn you Gregor. He's still alive at the end of Book 4 you know, kept alive by Qyburn's sorceries. Here's hoping for some horrific FrankenGregor to come lurching out of the darkness in Book 6.

Right now, I don't care about the HBO series, I don't care about the Cleganes or Davos or Stannis or Asha or Tyrion, I am only marginally interested in Danaerys even though she is my second favorite character, the only thing on my mind that has been on my mind since A Feast for Crows is:

Is Arya blind for good?! ****ing Faceless Men, I hate you. You blinded the best character in the book with your poison milk, I hope you all die in a fire. Arya <3 :(

Nay, nay Darkside, she's only temporarily blinded, so she can develop her hearing so she can hear a pin drop half a mile away! What kind uberwickedkewl ninja doesn't have insanely well-developed senses? Nay, mein freund, there's just going to teach her how to catch arrows by sound, concoct incredibly complex poisons using sense of smell alone, and various other uberwickedkewl tricks. Then when she gets her sight back and is the most dangerous eleven-year-old girl ninja (ninjette?) on the planet, she'll catch passage back to Westeros and finish off her list. Unfortunately, they all seem to be dying without her help.

Arya's gotten out of jams before. Remember how the Red Wedding chapter ends with her getting axed in the head, but then we found out "Oh, it was the blunt part of the axe! Everyone's favorite lil' psychopath just has a nasty bruise, not a decapitation.

I like his choices for Jeyne Westerling(hawt), Eddard Stark and Balon Greyjoy but by the Mother he really needs a new Robb Stark. He's too...prettyboy-ish. D:
And Varys is too young looking imo.

Also, lol @ having Christopher Walken as an Other. :imu:

Hooray for montages!(spoilers)

I'm hoping, but it seemed more like a punishment than a training handicap. And there was already one blind kid walking around the temple, and no one said it was temporary (although they might not have seen the need to say anything).

I'd just feel really bad for her if she was blinded for doing Arya Stark's work. That is her true nature, after all.

I myself believe Walken is the only man who can do justice as an Other. I concur with your opinion of Jeyne Westerling, and would also thrown in Dany Targaryen.

For some reason, I've always imagined Jurgen Procknow (sp?), the captain from Das Boot, as Ned Stark, but I'll happily accept Jack Davenport.

Varys's actor scared the crap out of me, because he looked like a giant baby in a suit. John Noble as Balon Greyjoy is perfect, I imagined him in that role when reading the novels, although I am absolutely outraged that the Rock is not playing Khal Drogo. I mean, who else can it be if not the Rock? Playing the Khal doesn't require any great skill, just look manly, and nail Dany every other chapter.

I agree about Robb, but maybe they can rough him up, I mean, the boy has a bloody full beard at fifteen. My sophomore class last year had 40-odd males in it, and my facial hair, if I may be so bold, was by far the most developed and manly, and all I had was a scruffy goatee.

Oh, and I've seen those montages before. Some of the artwork's a bit dodgy, but most of it is good and the music is superb. If any of you have played Medieval II Total War, do you know the launch music, that tune they play when the menu showing latest news with the Medieval II king dude pops up? I think it, or something like it, would make a superb theme song. Not all dancing happy fluffy knights in white armor capering music, but a good, rather melancholic/menacing medieval song, perfectly suited for ASOIAF, IMO.

Also, the WOW video was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a while. If the entire plot of the first two books were condensed into a WOW raiding lasting a couple minutes, that'd be it.

Yeah, i'm currently rereading for a third time and onto A feast for crows. It's actually, allot better the second read through, I understand the Dornish and Greyjoy characters allot better and I think they'll be pivotal in the story... with Euron and the Dornish both knowing and sending diplomats or whatever to Daenrys.

It's all going to kick off majorly in the next book :)

To divert ourselves until A Dance With Dragons is released:

If the seven kingdoms were a high school who would the charcters be? Come on, buy into the cliches, you know you want to...it is pretty self explanatory, if this were a high school situation which cliche (or not so cliche) high school personality would the aSoIaF chacacters be? I'll get the ball rolling.

Tyrion - Junior - The brilliant, handicapped kid that everyone envies but pities because his parents are abusive, but has it way more together than anyone knows. He has gone through all of the math and computer science classes the school offers, and has the highest GPA at school. He will probably be valedictorian. He got more college recommendation letters than he knew what to do with, and applied to about 50 colleges. He got into all of them, but he's contemplating staying for his senior year just to wreck the grade cure for another year of seniors.

Close friends with Jaime, but Cersei can't bear having him in the same photo as her. He's a class clown, suspended briefly for talking back to a professor, but still the imp of course. Doesn't matter whether it's Westeros or in high school, you'd still get picked on. Pays Bronn to be his friend. He is a computer nerd and spends most of his free periods in the library, avoiding his siblings and fixing and installing the school's computer systems. No one has any idea what?s he really doing is looking up porn on the school computers.

Jon - Sophomore - He is the quiet emo kid in the corner and tries to be everyone's friend. Quietly gets goods grades, has one foot in the geeks who look up to him as a hero and one with the jocks who look down on him for doing band and cross country instead of a 'cool' sport. The marching band is course the Night's Watch: they've got lame uniforms, a sense of bizarre solidarity that outranks family bonds, and woefully under-funded compared to the school's other electives. He's actually band captain and has been coaching them since the original coach Mormont caught a bunch of the more delinquent players trying to steal the equipment, and decided that he didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Grenn is the archetype of the clueless drummer, Sam looks ridiculous with that piccolo, Dolorous Edd plays clarinet and is permanently stoned, and Jon himself plays tenor sax. They all got into it because they wanted an easy A but realized too late that it was just really boring and unimportant, but now it's up to Jon Snow to lead them to victory for the upcoming band contest against an enormous band, the Wildling Wildcats (even though he's secretly dating one of their players). He is also active in ROTC and later enrolls in the army, where he's transferred to some place really, really cold (maybe Alaska), but gets by with Pink Floyd and D&D. He also doesn't appreciate 'Yo Mamma' jokes.

awsome i have been looking for a new series to sink my teeth into... whats the first called?

A Game of Thrones.

And on another note...
I just got the part where Arya arrived in Braavos and entered that black and white building and met that guy.....Arya what were you thinking?....ewwwwwww. :bonce:

What?
If I were an eleven-year-old girl I would certainly trust the shape-shifting, sorcerous, grand master of the world's deadliest assassin death-cult. Wouldn't you? :E

lol Thunder.

I think Jon and Ary will turn out to be pretty bad ass, not evil as such but they'll make some terrible mistakes imo.
Sansa will become a big player in the GoT and might join up with Nymeria... I think the wolves in the woods will do something pretty major, rout the tyrell army or something.

@ oldagerocker

You don't put a giant, man-eating, jet black she-wolf in the forest then not have her do anything, and the Stark wolves have a well-established tradition of bursting out of nowhere to maul people, be they drunken princes, wildling raiders, or ironborn sentries. Nymeria's going to take someone down, the only question is who...I hope it's not anyone Tyrell. They're the only people who seem semi-decent and know how to play the Game of Thrones

Just finished A Feast for Crows. Now comes the waiting period.

Cersei got owned 2x at the end. I was laughing my ass off when she first got charged with the same crimes as she put on Margaery and then Jamie snubs her.

SANDOR! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :(
*
So who is left to support the Starks? I assume that Brynden will rally with the other Tully guardsmen but what from there? Get help from The BwB to take back Riverrun? After all, isn't zombie Catelyn their leader now? Which houses are left in the North(not including those rat bastards of Bolton)? Blackwood and Reed I know but isn't Umber also safe? Maybe if Asha and Stannis can rally the North, Stark has a chance.

...and why the hell is Littlefinger being so nice to Sansa all of a sudden at the end? He is by far the sneakiest of them all...

Methinks Sandor lives.

I suggest you reread Brienne's chapter when she is at Quiet Isle. There she sees a large gravedigger, lamed in someway. Martin is careful that the man's face stays hidden, but Dog goes over to him and the text says specifically that Dog liked him. Plus when Brienne is talking to the abbot he says "The Hound is dead." But Sandor "is at peace."

Never "Sandor is dead." Also note how the Elder Brother explains how he himself came to the Quiet Isle. He tells Brienne he was knight and Brienne asks him how he changed. He says, "When I died in the Battle of the Trident", this gives a clear indication that when the Brother is talking about death, he isn't literal. A bit later he explains how he washed up on the Quiet Isle and how he was born again or came into his second life.

It's almost described as a sort of baptism. Put that together with the Hound is dead but Sandor is at peace. Also the Hound's horse and the lame gravedigger... There's a pretty good shot Sandor is alive. Besides since Gregor is still alive by Qyburn's sorceries, the Hound must be still alive, so he can slay the Mountain, marry Sansa, and make lots of babies!

And Littlefinger is being so nice to Sansa because he wants to get down her pants, or more accurately, up her skirt. I mean, the guy's name is Littlefinger for Chrissake.

I think this thread wins the "most spoiler tags" award

Well hopefully he doesn't stay there for long and that life there doesn't pacify him so that he can own Qyburnstein's monster. Unleash the Hound, Sandor! D:

This is highly unlikely but my personal dream is that at Cersei's trial, she nominates Gregorstein (also known as UnGregor or Qyborg) to be her champion. The High Septon searches far and wide among his faithful to find a warrior who can defeat this monstrosity until he is drawn to a quiet monastery, and there discovers a gravedigger with a mysterious, ass-kicking past...In the ensuing fight, Sandor is owned, but at the last minute, he confronts his fears, and throws a jar of wildfire at his necrotic brother. The Mountain That Shambles goes up like a Roman candle, and Cersei hangs. No, that'd be too perfect.

Sorry reviving this thread, but it's better than making a new one.
Besides, this is just too...much.

Jesus! Look @ 3:05.

And in other news, Martin has finished the first draft of the script for the HBO series!
