The largest retailers do know about release dates. In order to stock a store with a product (dvd, video, CD, or software), it must be pre-ordered by the company. The pre-order comes in before shipping date. Now, lots of times products get delayed, but when it comes to Wal-Mart, they get the real information. Wal-Mart makes or breaks lots of entertainment titles, and THEY often control when a product is released, at least they can control about a 10 day window, when it comes to smaller titles. Now, halflife is big, so Wal-Mart cant do much to change its release date, but they most certainly will be told when its going to come out, at least two omnths in advance. Vivendi needs to insure proper placement and space is given to the title in Wal-Mart, becuase they can control as much as 40% of sell-through sales for any company.

So, keep an eye on what Wal-Mart has to say about street dates.
