If Half-Life 3 will be ever released, would Valve abandon linear concept ?
Is linear gameplay too old for 2015/2016/2017 ?
What do you think ?

Why in the world would a linear game be "too old" for a given year?

After all, people today still play (and enjoy) text-based adventure games. Why would a linear shooter be different?

If your metric for "too old" is popularity, I think you need to change your metric. Why, if I find a game fun, should I care how many other people do?

It's very likely that Half-life 3 will have an isolated co-operative experience as Portal 2 did but multiplayer only?
fat chance! otherwise Half-life will lose what made it special.

Half-Life 3 will more than likely still be a mostly linear first-person shooter. Not an RPG, not an MMO, not a space exploration game, not a ****ing Batman spin-off.

It'll probably also have a co-operative mode and/or a competitive multiplayer component (like Half-Life 1 and 2).

the question isn`t and NEVER was if linear is still good enough for 2015. Open World is not straigth out better than linear, in fact I would argue that creating a linear experience (a good one) is much harder than making an open world game (since you can just copy Far Cry or Witcher 3 or something, its just more expensive)
Valve will do what makes the most sense for their vision of Half-Life 3, I don`t think any decision they make will be affected by popularity or marketing.

My favorite level design philosophy is Dark Souls though, which is kinda open world but still linear, it kinda combines all the good elements from both approaches.

I hope so.
