I was thinking about throwing my own LAN party for the first time, any advice to make sure it hits off well? Im planning about 4-11 people

- supply some drinks and food, but either ask people to bring money [to order pizza or whatever] or everyone brings their own favourite food/drink, which will probably be 2 minute noodles.
- give people the room they need for comfortable mouse/keyboard/monitor use.
- comfortable chairs and a solid table.
- make sure the room isn't hot.
- make sure noone starts playing sp, if you can have a schedule of sorts.
- if you have to, disable the internet so noone is leeching your bandwidth and doing their own thing.
- have good lighting, good as in none, though apparently that's bad for your eyes. we lan in a room which is completely dark with black lights on the roof and we all have perfect vision. ;)
- have enough power cables, power boards and network cables, especially incase people forget them.
- have a good selection of games.
- have a 'fun' game to play when you have played a 'serious' game for awhile.
- we have 1-3 hours in the beginning of the lan for leeching and whatever.

.. there's more, but meh.

scheduleing doesn't work tbh, some like it the way you do, and some don't, come to an overall decision for what to do and do it the way so that everyone -if not enjoys- doesn't hate it.
other than that, destrukt is right.

No booze :p

Got to agree with destrukt about the SP part. If someone starts playing some sp game it kinda ruins the lan party. Eventually other people will start playing sp's and so on.

It depends on the game....

If everyone starts playing single player Super Mario roms talking about how fun it was playing NES back in the day, that can be pretty fun times.

Playing single player Doom III or something can get pretty lame.

scheduling can either work really well, or fail badly.

it works well for us (there is about 8 of us who are the regulars so we can organise the games we want to play easily) and it would work well at say, some type of huge byoc event.

during one of our lans, someone finished download doom3 so we all started playing it at the same time. we had the room as dark and quiet as possible and we all had our headphones on max .. every few minutes you would hear a yell, then the sound of the mouse/keyboard jumbling about then someone complain .. that was damn fun, but [good] group sp experiences are rare.

yeah well you could organise the games you want to play, but you can't say for how long. i had this schedule once that we'd play "x" for like 1.5 hours, then we'd play "y". it ended up with 3 hours of "x", and actually, no one had the feeling to play the "y"... so e played "z".

i just hate mathematics :|

Just pick a shitload of games and then start playing them and don't stop till your eyes bleed :p

We usually do this when we have lans (we're about 17 people everytime).

- One big room
- Chairs and tables (If you dont have it, ask the people if they can bring some)
- Some kind of freezer
- Some kind of cooker/microwave
- Speakers (for playing music)
- TV (the winter olympics starts today right?)
- Power (This is critical)
- Beer
- Computers
- Sleeping bags
- A lot of fun toys (not sex toys, asshole)

Then party on!

We got 6 complains on the same night on the last lan we had so you might want to think about the neighbours so you dont play Hell march in the middle of the night loud as hell.

Also, booze can give some funny side effects if you take it with a lot of caffeine and suger. We had a guy who fainted 2 times on one lan hitting himself bloody in the middle of the night when everyone slept (He woke us with a big bang...)

And dont make schedule on what games to play... thats lame. Just play what you want to play and ask if someone wants to join.

make sure everyone is patched up

make sure everyone agrees before hand on what games will be played

make sure EVERYONE checks their comps for virii and spyware beforehand

have someone that knows computers inside and out, cause when 3 out of 5 computers can't find each other on the lan, you don't want everyone scratching their heads

don't swap pron or movies unless everyone agrees to. Otherwise you will have someone downloading a 1 gig porno or lord of the rings from someone elses' comp while you are trying to play and thus cause massive lag.

Don't have old large monitors too close to other people's comp towers. I once did that and I practically EMPed a friend's little brother's computer when i turned my monitor on. Monitor turned on, his computer browned out and wouldn't turn on for 30 minutes. After that day I named my computer Radiation Queen.

It'd be some Craic all right..... rimfire will laugh.

i say the number one thing to be certain of is make sure you all have the same games. at my lan parties some people have the same games but not everyone. In this case people start doing their own thing, playing stupid WoW, or playing different games in small groups. Lan parties are alot more fun when EVERYONE is playing the same game.

Also, a fun thing you can do overnight. Find a idiot who shares his "Shared folder" or whatever its called in the internet language on his computer. Boot up Direct Connect, point the temp download folder and the download folder to his shared folder over the network.

Commence download.

Its even funnier if hes playing and dont know why the hell the games keeps locking up because of low diskspace.

Oh the joy.

The # one rule of LAN parties is have a steady dose of caffine going into your body.......
The # two is to pick a game that evryone likes and evryone is good at...
theres nothing worse than having people complaining that they hate the game and then have them suck it at. It makes you look like an incompitent party host.
Next.......make sure you have plenty of munches nearby. its horrible for you to miss a round just for you to have to go get something to eat. You know your friends wouldnt respect your AFK. And speaking of AFK.....limit bathroom breaks to between rounds. or else your going to have a AFK noob killing frenzy.
