My mother has just put the responsibility on me to find the fatherless family a printer. Fair enough im the computer guru in the family, got all three PCs working fine, not to forget halflife2.net for all your support in problems I might have come across. ;)

But back to the printer . . . I know nothing about them.

Best one to get would probably be a DeskJet or whatever equivelant

What I need are a few points that I should know, an estimated price range of such, and if your feeling extra nice, or got not much else to do, some suggested printers (UK).

Printer will be for family use, not forever printing, but a few times a week at most.

Thanks people

If its just for word docs for like work or school etc then something like a low end epson printer which you could probably pick up for 30 quid. I think epson or cannon are good makes to look for, but the thing you have to watch out for is expensive cartrigdes, the printer might be a good price, but the cartridges might be £30, thats what happened to me, so watch out!

i just looked on http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Printers_52.html at there printers and they seem to have a good collection for a variety of different uses, like photo quality printers, laser printers and all in one printers where you can fax, copy, print etc.

I've got an old Lexmark M40 lying about.

Couldn't find a link but I have no use for it anymore.

Don't go for the lowest printer. Generally those have either the highest priced ink or low ink volumes.

I personally would check out the HP 5740 or Canon IP3000 (Canon model has low prices on ink).
Epson C86 is good too although the ink is priced a little higher.

i have the ip3000, and boy can i tell you fir the $60 i paid for it(discount at work) it gave me awsome quality photographs while really good on the ink comsumption. that and the individual ink system has saved my a ton. and hte duplexing is a great little feature.

if you were going for an hp(nice thing to have the print heads built in.) wait to get their new individual ink systems with the print head still in it. and they are only going for $1 more here than the canons.

and stay away from the lexmarks

Thanks alot for your posts guys, il probably get the Canon. The CD-R printing looks like an added bonus that I might just benefit from

I seriously thought I'd be looking over £100 here, £82 is a well decent price.

And don't worry, I'll remember the USB cable ;)

I take it the Canon IP3000 is not limited to photo printing

the hp psc 1210 has done me well for the past 8 months, never had to change the ink. and its a printer, scanner, copier.
