Can someone give me a list of all the versions of Half-Life there are? I know of just normal half-life, Half-Life 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 1. But what else is there? Can I get a list IN ORDER from newest to oldest half life two versions. Thanks.

No, you can't get a chronological list; they're basically concurrent with the original Half-Life.

Blue Shift (You play as Barney Calhoun)
Opposing Force (This one comes after Blue Shift)
Decay (This one isn't very canonical; it's mostly a port to the PS2)

And if there are any more, I don't know about them.
P.S.: Most people don't like Opposing Force; they say it introduces inconsistencies in the HL universe.

P.P.S.: Versions? Newest to oldest? Whaa? We don't do versions, and the old games aren't just like the new ones but older. They are whole new games. We use the term "sequels", or "expansion packs.

Well you've kind of got the list there already. Half-life, does go into expansion packs though, first being Opposing Force, then Blue-Shift. Afterwhich we have Half-life 2 many many years later, and the current Episode 1, and we are awaiting Episode 2,3 & 4.

Basically, it's

- BS (Barney gets out quickest)
- HL (Gordon doesn't... well, really get out, but his adventure finishes before Shepherd's)
- OF (Comes in late, finishes late)

*stasis period*

- HL2
- HL2: Ep1

No one knows where Portal will fit yet.

Not sure if it's valid to count Lost Coast in there, i can't remember if Valve said it was purely a showcase or related. In any case it would be located during HL2.

Seems to be part of HL1, was a chapter that was left out due to time constraints, became a tech demo, but I dont think it counts as part of HL because there is no logic to how you arrive there or where you go when it gets dark?

Lost coast was spose to be a part of highway 17. I think it was cut for size.

I have played Lost Coast. It was short. Anyway is blue shift, Opposing Force, and decay expantion packs for half life eposode 1 or are they different games all together?

How old is Half Life 2 (not epsode 1)? Does the graphics suck? Also eposode one came out AFTER half life 2 right?

SPL Tech, did you miss this post?

Basically, it's

- Half-life: Blue Shift (Barney Calhoun gets out quickest)
- Half-Life (Game of the year) (Gordon Freeman doesn't... well, really get out, but his adventure finishes before Shepherd's)
- Half-Life: Opposing Force (Adrian Shepard Comes in late, finishes late)

*stasis period*

- HL2
- HL2: Ep1

Jeez you're just learning about half-life now?

Anyway to answer you're question about halflife2's visuals, well you really should go search gamesites and find out for yourself.

But:

Half-life 1 was released in '98 and uses a heavily modified quake engine.

Half-life 2 was released in '04 and uses the Source engine.
Half-life 2: Episode 1 was released in '06 and also uses the Source engine, but it's been updated a lot since 2004.

So basically HL2 and Episode 1 look pretty much the same, but Ep1 has some new visual effects.

so you dont have HL2 yet?

GET IT NOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!:bounce:

Cannon (despite what some fools will say):
  • Half-Life(the original)
  • Half-Life: Opposing Force (the first expansion pack, you play as a soldier)
  • Half-Life: Blue Shift (you play as Barney Calhoun from Half-Life 2. Is short and has no new enemies but it very fun)
  • Half-Life: Decay (a co-op game released with the PS2 version of HL1. Is not available on the PC and has a some good story info despite what some people will say :|)
  • Half-Life 2
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 1

Non-Cannon:
  • Half-Life: Uplink (demo for Half-Life with unique levels, download for free)
  • Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast (a tech demo, very high res and high poly, it only has 1 map. Get it free if you have HL2 or EP1 on your steam account)

Lost Coast and Episode 1 have a commentary system and HDR (upgraded lighting)

So blue shift and opposing forces are expantion packs to half life? Or are they completly new games? I mean can you go and buy just opposing forces or blue shift without the orginal half life?

Yes. On Steam, that is. I don't know about the non-steam versions.

They're sort of like "expansion packs" for Half-Life 1, but you are able to install them from their CD and play them without having half life installed.

However if you're looking to buy them, it might be easier to just order them and download them using Steam.

Here's a list of games you can get with steam: http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=all&

Portal doesn't have anything to do with Half-Life. It's just a game made by VALVe. Similar to Team Fortress or Counter Strike.

You need a gantt chart to do the plot timeline crossover points.

Err, actually, Valve said it was set in the HL2 universe and supposedly takes place sometime during the HL2 events.

Ha! That's about right though...

If you seriously haven't played Half Life or any of the expansion packs, do it right now. All of them are very good games (in my opinion - as mentioned before, there are arguments against Opposing Force, but I found it to be as enjoyable if not more so than Half Life).
