AMD CPU Question

ok iv been thinking with my brain again and i was wondering is a overclocked (lets say) 2500+ is at 11X200(mulitplierXFBS) is this the same performance and speed of a 3200+ (which is 11X200 default)? or is there new arcitecture and optimizations on the 3200+? :dozey:

hey, if i could add on a little question here, if an AMD is running on an FSB of 333, then why in the multiplier and stuff would it be 166? and how would i go about, say, increasing the FSB from 333 to 400?

oh, and to your question, i think the 2500 is a Barton, so therefore, the bump should bring it close to 3200 performance, but you can check if against sisoft sandra if you really want to know

the multiplier wouldn't be 166, 166 is the front side bus speed, and 166 is basically like saying 333 because it's FSB*2, so to get a FSB of 400 you'd lower the multiplier and set the FSB to 200 instead of 133 or 166.

if you're talking about a 2500+ Barton and a 3200+ Barton, then they would be equal

right, i meant the FSB number that's coupled with the multiplier

sorry for the double post, another thing i wanted to ask, if i up the FSB number that's coupled with the multiplier, does that up the FSB on the RAM as well? basically, is the RAM FSB and the processor FSB independent, especially in the Nforce 2 chipset? or will i want to keep the RAM and processor FSB the same?

the reason i ask is i'm going to be getting an Athlon XP 2700+ that has an FSB of 333, and i'm getting some nice Corsair XMS that has a max of 400. i want to try to up the FSB on the processor to 400, so i can run the memory at it's max FSB as well.

with a well ventilated case with an intake fan and an exhaust fan that can both move a good amount of air, and, say a Vantec Aeroflow on the processor, do you think i'll be able to do that?

they're not independant, and if you're going to do that i'd recommend getting a xp 2500 barton core, running it at 200fsb and dropping the multiplier down to get it running nicely, then overclock from there, especially on an nforce2 board the performance will be much better just running it that way.

i wouldnt take a 2700+ and overclock it for a number or reasons. First off, it's a bit more expensive than the 2500. Then there is the fact that it is based on the tbred core, not the barton. the tbred has a 256k L2 (or L1, i can't remember) while the barton has a 512k. This makes a huge difference from what i can see. the 2500+ runs at 11x166 = 1833. The 3200+ runs at 11x200 = 2200. the 2700+ runs at 13x166 = 2170. thats on 30 mghz slower than the 3200+, but the 3200+ is still about 18-20% faster(i can't remember all the benchmarks very well).

xtasy the 2500+ barton core is not at 200 fbs defualt its at 333, u ave to overclock it to 200 usually by lowering the multiplier. i plan to do 11X200 on my 2500+ when i get it.(slk-800 and smart fan II)

ok, another question, if i up the FSB on the Barton to 400, will it affect the AGP, PCI slots and such? or just the RIMM mounts?

With a Athlon XP 2800+, what do you think i would be able to overclock to with only a little extra cooling? I have a Vantec aeroflwo CPU cooler, and 4 case fans. What do you all think, and no dont suggest a 2500+, i know there great, but im stickign with the 2800+

Yeah i heard it was good. But i heard from a few reviews that the TMD caused extreme vibration inside the case. Anyone with the Aeroflow tell me if this happened.

hmmmm, considering its Vantec it might have been a fualty part. If i do get a lot of vibration ir noise, ill tell ya. Ill tell ya the same time im returning it lols.
