ok i was playing hl1 and i was wondering why is G-man there before the experiment? he shows up a few times, it got me thinking but couldnt come up with anything good :cheese:
any ideas?

Because he CAN do whatever the hell he wants, therefore he DOES:P

Why?
(Not arguing, I want to know your reasoning)

I don't believe he orchestrated the Resonance cascade...why would he? It brings about a series of events that he ultimately opposes? He uses Gordon in an attempt to clean up the mess. What would he achieve? Absolutely nothing.

Originally, Valve clearly intended the Gman to be the Administrator of Black Mesa, they just never solidified it and thought later hey, we don't need to follow that road.

According to good ol' wikipedia the G-Man seems to oppose the Resonance Cascade.

Certain G-Man speech files of interest can be extracted from the data packs of HL1. These selected sound files can be heard when the G-Man is speaking to a scientist in an inaccessible room at Sector C, though they are muffled and barely audible. (See above appearance list.) Note that these transcriptions are merely guesses after repeated listens, since the sound files are deliberately muffled.

* "We should not let the system commence." The G-Man may have known that something bad would happen if the experiment proceeded, and was trying to convince the scientist not to follow through with the experiment. However, this seems to conflict with the theory that the entire resonance cascade scenario was intended as a "pre-employment test" for Freeman. One other explanation for this dialog could be that the G-Man wanted to delay the experiment until Gordon Freeman reached the experimental chamber. Possibly because the G-Man knew that anyone inside the experimental chamber at the time of the incident would be safe until they returned. This would also explain why the player misses out on the initial alien invasion.

* "My employers don't agree!" The meaning of this is difficult to interpret. The scientist must have said something that contradicted the plans of the G-Man's "employers," whoever they are.

* "You're a scientist, and a fraud. Back off." Presumably, the G-Man is angry because he has failed to make the scientist understand his point of view.

* "If I had wondered why I'd chosen him, I would certainly..." The end of this sentence fades into inaudibility. Some speculate that the G-Man is Gordon's "Administrative Sponsor" (since the Administrative Sponsor is listed as "Classified"). The G-Man might have been asked something in regard to Freeman's position on the science team.

"You're a scientist and a fraud. Back off."

Gotta love that one :D

I don't know if Valve intended that. I think it was just something the community thought and latched on to, and it became "fact" until it was discredited in HL2. Remember that one of the scientists in the beginning remarks, "This place is crawling with the administrator's men today." The only person other than scis and security guards hanging around was the G-man. I think he was always intended to be a representative of the Black Mesa facility.

I'm not sure right now where I personally stand on riomhaire's theory, but I'll tell you what he had to gain from it: the border world. The source of the crystals and the catalyst required for local teleportation technology. And I don't know whether he planned it or not, but he also gained Freeman as his personal champion.

On the opposite end of the argument, there's the fact that starting the resonance cascade lead to the Combine incident, which the G-man seems to be opposed to (even though he might not have known about it, but I don't believe that for a second), and the Charlie Brown teacher-voice dialogues that people have tried to make sense of.

I have my own personal theory about who the G-man is, what he wants, and who he works for, and I will say that if he DID have knowledge that the portal storms would bring in the Combine, and he DID select Freeman to perform the specific tasks that he performs from the very beginning, then it's likely he could have orchestrated the entire Half-Life series. Starts RC > has Freeman open the portal storms > Combine come > Freeman destroys Combine.

He was there for his own personal enjoyment, aruguing with the scientiest, walking around zombies and Xen creatures, randomly riding trains and magically puts you unders stasis.

Everyone knows why he was there for those reason, DURH!!!

He was there before the RC because he was watching his "prospect". He has been interested in Gordon since the start why else would he always be poping up where ever you go, almost like a reminder that hes watching you. He has gained a lot of things because of the RC;The border world, the crystals, probably alot of rep, and who knows what else. But I think the main reason he started all these events is to(and I've said this before) train Gordon. I mean think about it the G-man seems to oppose all these events but he allows them to happen, why? Because they are an exellent test for Gordon. Train him for what I'm not so sure, personally I think hes training Gordon to Probably take his place;whatever it is he does. This also explains why the G-man dosn't interfere directly cause he wants you to be ready for when you take his place. Cause once you take his place no one is going to help you not even a little. Maybe the G-man went through similar trials many years ago there is this one quote I think it goes something like"But there is still the lingering matter of witnesses. I admit that I have a fascination with those who adapt and survive against all odds: they rather remind me of myself. If for no other reason, I have argued to preserve you, for a time." OP4

Well thats certainly the impression I got. Don't recall any scientists saying that either...jog my memory?

I was always under the impression that he was just "watching" Gordon and cared more about Shephard(saved him and kept him in Black Mesa). That is, until Gordon killed Nihilanth of course.

You know what thats called? Favortism. Damn you Shephard!(see below)

Assuming the Gman was not Gordon's "sponsor" or whatever, the Gman was pretty much watching Gordon after the RC, because he only took interest in his abilities there. He wasn't training Gordon with the RC and he never wanted it to happen. Black Mesa was an embaressment to him.
He may have wanted to take the borderworld, but he was clearly against the dodgy containment stuff of the RC.

is it not safe to assume that the GMan worked for the combine in halflife and was a free agent with his own 'staff' in halflife 2

The G-Man wouldnt work for the Combine anyway.
If he has that teleportation Tech and he worked for them then its safe to assume the Combine would have that tech also. But they dont.

Hmmm...I think personally the G-Man is like some guy from the future...coming back to maybe guide Gordon to the right path and save the future...or something like that...hehehe

I Found out (or well im pritty sure i found out)who G-man works for!!!

I was listing to some sounds on gfcscape and a mager sound. it sounds like g-man works for a govnment agency or for the government. he says "I tock the liberaty of striping u of ur weapons since most of them were govenment property as for the suit i think uv ernd it. heres were the sound is. it 1:17 min long. half life.gfc/valve/sound/gman/gman_offer. listen to it. ialso found 1 were he says "Thats y im here mister.freeman i have recemend ur services to my ahhhhhhhh my employers" that 1s 20 seconds log and it kinda sounds like he lieing bout somthing. half life.gfc/valve/sound/gman/gman_potential
if u find eny thing e-mail it to me at [email protected]

Woah, you're a pretty demanding newbie.

I'd like to stand here and say, 'don't jump to conclusions...'
