It will just freeze, the audio just keeps repeating, and nothing will work till I get the standard windows error message after 2 or 3 minutes.

It freezes not soon after you leave the room where you met back up with Alyx. I've never had a problem with the game before but since I started "Anticitizen One" I have noticed some minor glitches and slight freeze ups.

I tried to validate the steam files but it doesn't work and the same thing happens.
I don't belive I have changed anything or did anything new on my system that might cause the problem.
Here are my system's specs:

Intel Pentium D 830 3Ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
256MB nVidia GeForce 6800

Can anyone help me, I really wanna play the game but this happens everytime.

Could you explain a bit more as to where you are? I might be able to get you around the problem. You can take screenshots using the F5 key. The screenshots are stored in the Steam/Steamapps/YOURUSERNAME/Half-Life 2/hl2/screenshots folder. You can then upload the screenshots to www.imageshack.us and post the links in your reply. I'll see where I can guide you to to avoid the problem.

It would freeze after you left this room and when you were about to go forward into this room, but if you turned left and went to the end of this hallway it would freeze.

I figured out I didn't need to go there and I was able to go on, but it still had the slight freezes and glitches. I started to play the game again today to get the screenshots and it didn't freeze, so I played for a half-an-hour longer and it seemed fine. Maybe there was just something weird yesterday and shuting my computer off and letting it set over night fixed it.

Thanks for trying to help anyway though, I'll tell you if it starts acting up again.

K.

If it starts acting up again, try taking out the side of your computer, maybe the hardware is overheating (which often results in the oddest problems)

Usually this happens in any game when you OC clock something, dust builds up, poor ventilation. System and device/components heat up and start to slow down after long period of game play but then start to work normal when system cools off and computer is been shut for a while.
See if you can get can of computer dust air spray and dust off system if you didn't do so for last six months. If you did OC something try to back it off of it a little and or get a decent cooling system.
If it was a software glitch/corruption it would do the same thing no matter how long you had system turned off.

Good Luck.

Well the thing is it's an almost brand new computer, I got it on December 23, 2005. I doubt much dust would be built up but i'll check it out.

I was playing longer than usual, that might figure in to it, but it's a Dell XPS 400, I would think that they'd put in a good a decent cooling system.

Yes Dell would put decent stock cooling for their system configuration and no if you bought this back in December 2005 no dust can build up that fast unless u never vacuum the carpet. :P
And you do have decent RAM and Video Card. Did these components Video Card and RAM came with the Computer? Or did you upgrade it yourself? If you did upgrade system did you change PSU too or you still using the 350W dell stock? because that card needs at least 450W PSU for it to work properly and 350W is not enough or any less power.

XPS400 is Dell top of the line it shouldn't do these stuff......Thats why I awlays build my own so I can blame on myself.

Good Luck.

Lol, No, I'm a relatively clean person and have vacuumed my carpet 3 times since then, lastest being 3 days ago. and nope again, I custom configured everything on the Dell site before ordering it and haven't changed any of the hardware myself.

I updated the Graphics Card driver earlier today, and right now I'm halfway though "Follow Freeman" and it was glitching and freezing a little, not often though so nothing major.

Yea, I bought a new puter before Chrissie. Loaded HL2 but the thing froze all the time!
Problem was resolved by updating the driver for the Geforce card, now goes like hot snot!!

Could it be possible that you upgraded PC at dell site but didn't upgrade power supply unit? Cuz once you add more powerful components into PC you will need more power. And most PC manufacturers do cut corners on PSU. you do need at least 450W-500W of juice once you add stuff.

Look into it and find out if you did. Your PC my lack the power to cool or your Video Card may lack the power to operate fully. Either way it would hurt.
Open up case and post what spec PSU has on panel.

Good Luck.

I opened it up and looked at the PSU and it says "DC Output: 375W" is that what I'm looking for. I checked on the Dell site and you can't upgrade the power supply through there and the only way you can get a better one it to get a Dell XPS 600 with a 650 Watt Power Supply and I just couldn't afford that.

Also, I found another problem. I was playing "Dark Energy" and I got to where you are shooting at the bright white light and then the shields poped up and I had all but two sheilds down when my game just crashed and the Window's "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." poped up. The same thing happened two times and I just shut down my computer after the second time.

That really sucks because I'm so close to beating the game.

Edit: Just happened again after playing for two minutes and it froze at the load screen prior to that.

Edit 2: I was able to beat the game but I turned the graphics and everything as low as I possible could. With the Specs I have (pretend I get a 500W PSU) shouldn't I be able to play this with every thing on high and the best graphics?

375W isnt enough now adays specially when you added more component into your PC. Go ahead and get yourself a decent 500W aftermarket PSU.

I still use my 500W Dynex PSU I bought three years ago and it still pumps my Hot Rot. it probably paid itself off 10 times by now....hehe

try here they pretty cheap but you must live in the US otherwise it is no use to ya. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1079&
