So far, Im thinking that FarCry did a better job of drawing you into the game and sustaining interest. I have been playing HL2 for a few hours per day since it was released but to be honest I think in terms of action and pacing Half Life 1 was way better. It really seemed to do an excellent job with making you feel like you were really there and exciting stuff was happening. This one seems like you wander around a lot and many people who all look the same shoot at you. The whole canal sequence seems to drag on for ages too.

I will say that I am very impressed with the graphics and the ability to pick up insignificant objects and throw them around. Maybe it gets better later on in the game. Anyone think this also?

Nah, FarCry got really boring for me after the Trigans started appearing, got quite near the end when it just turned into a slog, I couldn't be bothered finishing it to be honest.

I think Half-Life 2's strengths definitely lie in it's characters, some of the best characters in a computer game ever I reckon, the main problem I had with HL2 was that you felt like you had no purpose if you know what I mean? You didn't really feel like there was a really important reason why you had to be going to all these places.

Ravenholm though is genious!

Hahahahahaha FarCry...FarCry...Does sound sorta familiar, what was that again?

Yeah, I agree completely. In HL1 you had three primary goals: get to the surface, then as soon as you get there you find out you need to get to the lambda complex (with a stop off at the satelite launch in between), and finally you find out that you have to go to Xen and sort everything out. But you have reasons for going where you go.

To me it seems that HL2 doesn't give you any real reason to go to Eli's base, and when you get there nothing important really happens (you could have gotten the gravity gun from Kliner, or from a combine base or something, for example), then you just have to get back to City 17, simply because you have no idea what else you're supposed to do. That ties up all of the coast, although you find out you're supposed to get Eli, but it was never very clear he was captured in the first place (how, why, etc) or what you're supposed to do once you find him. Once you get to there the purpose is a bit clearer though - you have to get into the citadel and confront Breen (although you're not really told why, just that it's the obvious thing to do).

Just after writing this, I realised that HL2 does have some long goals like HL1 does, although I don't think they're as specific and aren't really explained properly.

However one thing HL1 does have that I don't think HL2 does, and that's very clear particular short-term goals for most of it's chapters.

Unforseen Consequences, Office Complex - find out what's going on, get to the surface alive
We've got Hostiles - get away from the soldiers and keep alive, get to the lambda core
Blast Pit - kill the tentacles
Power up - power up the rails and kill the garg
On a rail - navigate the rail network to get towards lambda core
Apprehension - working towards lambda core, get out alive
Residue processing - recover from your mugging, heading for lambda core
Questionable Ethics - discover what the scientists were doing an escape
Surface tension, forget about freeman - navigate the surface while keeping alive, killing soldiers
Lambda Core - start up the reactor and get to Xen
Xen - work out what's going on and kill the Nihilanth.

No. Farcry should be used by Santa instead of a lump of coal to give to bad boys and girls at Christmas. Why? Cause playing with a lump of coal is way more fun.

wow. why do you care if farcry was better? who ELSE cares?

FarCry sucked ass.

Half-Life 2 kicks ass.

Sucking<Kicking

I think only one thing sucked in HL2 : the ending! Goddamn it Valve!

i got bored with far cry after those werid animals appeared aswell. i jus cn;t be asked to finish it but HL2 i jus cn;t get enuf of

lol ur right

very few people in this world are capable of thinking for themselves, as shown by a lot of people on this board. herd-mentality, we are all sheep, follow the leader, baaaah.

The pacing feels absolutely perfect for me. It crescendos at the right moments, and drops down in action at the right moments. I'm finding it a perfect blend of action and quiet moments.

Or maybe you're just crazy?

No i personally think this game is better, I did like far cry alot just because it was an incredibly fun game at times, and it was nice to be able to take your own routes to objectives etc.. I hated the plot though, it was just beyond laughable and the character design was terrible imo (shittest aliens ive ever seen).

I'm just having alot more fun with HL2, where far cry was fun in certain areas and really dull the rest of the time, HL2 has much better pacing and there arent any dull moments imo.

hahahahahhahahahhaaah!

Very good, very good funny man funny funny man........wait.......I can't stop myselhahahahahahahhahah You gotta write this s*it down man ahahahah

Exactly what I thought, they were pretty crappy enemies, and nowhere near as fun as the mercenaries. Besides, the plot was shite and the characters were annoying - I wouldn't piss on Jack Karver if he was on fire.

I haven't finished HL2 just yet, but so far it's better by quite a fair bit. The thing I find interesting is that, in many ways, it feels like such a completely different game to the original. It's something not many sequels are capable of so all credit to Valve for pulling it off.

Because someone disagrees with you, that makes them a sheep... Interesting logic.
