Barney questions

I have yet to play through all the variations of the first HL, so I'm a bit in the dark on two things about Barney.

First, when he talks about a cat haunting him, what's the story behind that?

And second, the line "And if you see Dr. Breen, tell him I said F**K YOU!" is referencing to what? Did Dr. Breen and Barney have some conflict in an earlier game?

I'm not entirely sure about your first question, but obviously Barney and Dr. Breen have a strong reason to be angry at each other, so the answer to your second question is obvious.

Kleiner and Barney had a minor teleportation accident involving a cat.

Barney hates Breen for the same reasons every citizen on earth does.

Thanks

Teleportation problem huh? I can only imagine.

And yes, I knew he hated Breen because everyone else did, just wondering if there was any specific event between the two in a previous game.

Thanks again!

About the teleportation thing, I think that was inspired by "The Fly", where the scientists first puts his cat in the machine to test it and it vanishes, but its disembodied meow is heard intermittently throughout the rest of the movie.

Though I'm not sure. I've never seen "The Fly"

I saw it a long time ago, though I barely remember the part about the cat. But that makes sense.

Well, Breen isn't called by name until Half-Life 2. Prior to that there had been references to an "administrator" at Black Mesa, but noone knew who he was. It used to be common for fans to speculate that The G-Man was the administrator, but then it was revealed in HL2, that it was actually Breen.

So, given that Breen had no specific identity until the current story arc, it's unlikely that Barney's grudge refers to anything from earlier in the franchise (unless perhaps it was Black Mesa's failure to provide a comprehensive dental plan for it's security guards).

We know that Eli has specific reasons for hating Breen, but all that comes from HL2 retconning.

Do you think he actually hates him? I get the sense they were pretty good friends back at BM and what have you...I think it's more the feeling of being betrayed than hate.

Makes sense, after all, Dr. Breen refers to him as 'Oldest(or Dearest) friend." (Dark Energy, speech by DR. Breen in his office) so it's possible I guess, but obviously, Breen's gone off in a different direction. And Eli's just upset because now he has no one to play Monopoly Combine Edition

He hates him because Breen betrayed the human race (although I really don't see what else he could've done in his position, given the fact that he is merely a Combine puppet and it was either surrender or annihilation).

1: It's a lıttle runnıng joke ın HL2. In Red Letter Day:
Barney: Are you sure ıt's workıng thıs tıme Doc? I stıll have nıghtmares about that cat.
Alyx: What cat?
Kleıner: Don't worry. We've made major strıdes sınce then...major strıdes.
Alyx: WHAT CAT!?

[later, durıng Alyx's teleportatıon]
Alyx: Yeah...about that cat...

[ın Follow Freeman]
Dıd you hear a cat just now?...That damn thıng stıll haunts me.

2: Bareny just hates Breen for obvıous reasons (He uses bıg words that Barney doesn't understand ın hıs Breencasts)

Nah, he doesn't hate him.

Well, it's a video game character, so it's kinda hard to read his emotions. Maybe hate is too strong of a word, but he definitely dislikes him.

Well he had to kill the darn things with a crowbar and guns in Black Mesa (Half Life: Blue Shift) because they attacked him and nearly zombified him, wouldn't you have a huge distrust for sharks if one attacked you for no apparent reason and you've never seen one before.
I know I'd be traumitized for a while if some vicous pitbull tried to attack me.

Now where is that thread i made?
*looks around*
Hmmm

I seem to have lost my thread about the cat.
