Biological or mechanical?

Are the gunships (and striders) biological or mechanical? Or is it that they are biological with combine technology/machinery attached to them? I assume the gunships are part of both, and I am not sure about the strider, but I know that the combine soldiers are part mechanical and part biological.

You are correct, they are both biological and mechanical. The idea being that the combine took organic creatures and forcefully evolved them by using technology into things like the gunships and striders as you said. Each race they capture they do this to apparently. Those ones on HL2 are mainly synths. Those weird zombie things called stalkers are forcefully evolved human beings, without vital organs and lasers on their legs for some reason. We can only guess what they are trying to do with this race (pfft losers)

Yeah, humans suck too much to be anything more useful than menial labor.

Yeah, it was kind of a style that Valve was going for. That at a certain point technology becomes so complex that it starts to resemble living beings, or that the best of biology was being welded with the best of technology.

Have you heard about their ideas about the Combine Advisors? That they were a super-sentient species that became so dependant upon their technology that they were forced to rely upon it, to even move around or even see? Interesting concept. And also one I see, honestly, that may strike our species at some point in our evolution. At what point does biological evolution become a technological ideal that we, as organic beings, can see fit to implement?

Heh. A lot of the story is really interesting. I think it is unfortunate that they didn't directly present more of it to you in the games, because if you play through it you kind of get a mild sense of the story, but not very many clear details of what is going on. I got all of my info on the story from here .

Yeah i agree, most people do have gaps. Although this isn't entirely fact, some is theory with some 'evidence'. If you really wanna know more i'd suggest buying "Raising the Bar" book, by the sounds of it GreatGat has it, and many other members. Fills in many gaps and extras (such as the combine advisor and cremators etc)

biomechanical

giger represent! speaking of which, if you read this dark elf... please do concept art?

Combine Gunships may have been sea dwelling creatures in oceans with those fins, but might have been insects with natural flying abilities. Combine Dropships may have been crablike creatures that walk on land and swim in the water

I thik they are half bio, half mech. If they were wholly bio then why do they go *clang* when I shoot them? :|

I think that they are mostly mechanical, but maybe with biological brains. This is based on the fact that I have never seen something biological with a gun sticking out of its forehead.
