The team has been working hard towards this day, and continues to work with confidence and motivation.

Concept art is not media...

concept art is used as a reference for actual game assets. It has no value beyond that. It's like writing a description of your mod saying "it's going to have all these really cool features!" before any of them are implemented, and then expecting people to be impressed.

I'm afraid I strongly disagree.

Concept art plays a more significant role than you're giving it credit for. It provides a visual -and therefore immediately accessible- reference for anyone wanting to know more about the mod. Early on in a mod's development you will have very few assets created, perhaps none you actually believe reflects the style you're going for. Good concept art is a reference for both people already working on the game and people you'd want to recruit. It also gives fans an idea of what you're aiming towards, the sort of fans who make up your community and are a valuable asset to your mod's progress, lending credibility to your vision while simultaneously allowing it greater notoriety in the communities that you may well want to recruit from.

In this case, the concept art isn't absolutely necessary, since BM:E is based on something that already exists, so references are already there. The same is probably true for ZM, which takes place on Earth, in an environment that permeates the lives of your mappers, modellers, etc. For instance, the church you mapped is a reproduction of one near where you live, so no concept was necessary (perhaps you took some photos and drew some pictures, but it didn't have to be imagined).

But I do believe concept art is a visual aid that will secure you talent and a fanbase, if you feel you require either of these things for your project.

We're going to have to agree to disagree then :)

It's a reference being passed off as media, as they have no screenshots etc.

No, they mixed the SiN: E Magnum style into the HL2 9mm style.

darn, at first I thought this thread was about Black Mesa:SOURCE being released. but then I actually read closer.... :(

Oh boy! Another mod set in the oh so original period of the Seven Hours War that will surely do it justice with the extensive media and talent on offer!

No but seriously. It's a good job that so many teams take the Seven Hour War as their basis. It heightens the chances that one of them, one day will actually create a playable level.

Today is the second and third day of our media release! Today you'll be seeing a few of our props which will be featured in game. Also you'll get a sneak preview of 6 of our weapons, conception, renders and a special surprise on the last day. So let the media roll on out again, remember you can always discuss anything, questions, comments, flames, in our official forums! Also keep in mind a lot of these are still works in progress, things like textures will be vastly different when models are 100% done.

Also, today you will, when we finish uploading, get to see a few of our maps.

To the guy who said one of guns was a mix of the sin & hl2 9mm. That was 100% accidental, the guns themselves have been done for about 2+ months now. So please dont think we are ripping off Sin or any other game.

As for the concept art, yes it is 'technically' media. Good media? Thats a moot point becuase its based on opinions of people. However I will say that they were just not used for bait and switch. The concepts themselves have model counter parts, however not of release quaility. We dont approve of releasing unfinished player models, as fully textured and in-game npcs are 100x more believable then a T post render.

Also to the guy who was being sarcastic about yet another 'seven hour war' mod. Its a popular time and people want to try and tell their own story to what happened durring that time, we want to 'try' and stay completely accurate to what was said in game from people like Kliner and Eli along with hints picked up from bilboards. Granted we wont be able to make something 100% accurate, but thats part of the fun!

We do have some in-game screenshots, granted they arnt much because we are saving the in-game stuff for our 4th release day. Overall this is really just a huge teaser for our mod. You know like watching that 2 minute Halo 3 teaser....something to show work is being done, promote credibility, and just to show off to the people who are anxiously awaiting the day they can download it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions about the mod though, but I ask for everyone to keep an open mind and to join us on our forums and be apart of the development by discussion!

Heated debate - I thought I might want to give a comment or two as well.

DVS has been existing since August of last year - growing, organizing and planning their future in HL-Modding. Close to January, we came up with "Black Mesa: East" (short BME), and started planning out what we really would like to produce and achieve with BME.

During a discussion in early January, it was actually clear that another mod is being developed - taking place during the 7 Hour War.

This is where the public likes to start and spread rumors -
they read "You play as a veteran of the 7 Hour War" -
and immediatly believe that the 7 Hour War is part of the mod.

Well let me re-assure you - BME takes place where other mods may end - we start in the last hour - 30 minutes - of the 7 Hour War - and go on from there.

It's also interesting to see that from January up until March / April - we've recieved quite a number of criticisms about any sort of Media Release - etc.
Now that we went ahead and triggered our three day Media Release - a debate on HalfLife2.net is sparked - whether this is a true media release.

If we were to "satisfy" you with game-play content - and a downloadable demo - we'd probably work out something to release at the end of this year - you wouldn't hear from us - and the entire project would be considered as *dead*.

So enjoy what we have, enjoy that you will see a lot more of it - and have a mod which you can track - and help us to improve, if there are things you find horrible.

Comment on them, sign up to our forums, start a discussion - we surely won't ignore it.

My Best Regards,

v0rt3x - [DVS Administration]
