Now, a point that i have made about games lots of times is that its ALL about the replayability. This can be in the form of a kick ass multiplayer, simple and chaptered SP (MP2 and halo), or just so awesome that you want to play it from start to finish (or however far you can get) when you sit down. The problem that HL2 might have is the same problem that i had with HL1, its a GREAT game, but i load up halflife.exe for the mods and DM. In a recent review, they were talking about how every level has its own unique atmosphere, music, and feel to it (Ravenholm, C17, etc..) Halo had a similar feel, when you played the Sient Cartographer on heroic, you really needed your teammates, and it was a lot of fun! But on levels like the library, it was just you killing a few thousand flood. I revisit Halo all the time for moments like this, the two betrayals and the ground part of the silent cartographer because they are a lot of fun, and i love to replay the moments you get.
Its the same with Max Payne 2, it is RIDICLIOUSLY short, and yet, i play it 10x more than half life, because there are a few maps which are just awesome to repeat (im in the middle of something, The seven million dollar question) This is because even though the gameplay is pretty much the same, the levels and weapons you get make every level very different. And so i would replay The Seven Million Dollar Question on the hardest level every day and it wouldnt get old, because i would be always refining my technique, or seeing how fast i could blast through it (it gets amazingly easy on Dead on Arrival after you can beat it on the first 2 modes..)
So, my point, do you think that Half Life 2 can make you revisit specific levels as much as possible because you just love to kill those antlions, or you just love to storm the city with your squad? I know Half Life 2 will be a kick-ass game, but they can make it even better if they can make the game very replayable and you dont have to rely on the Mods and Multiplayer to satisfy your empty wallet
