Can somone explain the story to me please....

Now, I think I know the story, or I thought I did till someone asked me, then I was like christ what is it. Im currently up to NovaProspect or whatever itscalled. And as far as I understand the story, the police people are trying to control the world/protect it, so as a character I always was under the impression I was not on the wrong side of the law, but the law believed I and the whole Black Mesa team as a group are a threat.

Anyway in thinking of this I thought hell, do I fully undersatnd the original half Life story, now as far as I understood that (I was 9ish when I first played it btw), they were scientists who experimented with species and suchlike, and a teleporter went wrong basically allowed aliens to enter our world, and I as a character (gordon that is) had to save the world etc, course may have that wrong.


Soooooo with the lack of manual in my game case (btw am I the only one who just got a Quick help card thing in there box), and my Half Life Generations too having nothing in it, anddd having lost my original half life (did that have a manual explaining the story in anyway?) i cannot read up.
So please someone explain....

Basic story:
In Half-Life 1 you are a scientist working at Black Mesa. An experiment that you assist with creates a dimensional rift/portal to a planet named Xen. Aliens invade, and hell ensues. Anyway, you fight your way out of Black Mesa and are contacted by the G-Man (dude with the suitcase). He contracts your services through force by telling you that you can work for him or die.

Now, it's Half-Life 2 and the G-Man has dropped you in an unfamiliar place and an unfamiliar time. Gordon doesn't know what the hell is happening since an obvious amount of time has passed between Black Mesa and City 17. What we can gather from little parts of the game is that Earth surrendered to the Combine forces and now Dr. Breen (that face you see on the televisions) is the administrator to Earth. Finish the game and you'll learn a whole lot more.

Ah ok, things cleared up about HL2 and glad I knew mostly what 1 was about, nearly finished now, (i think) so wont be long now. Cheers
