cant get cheats to work....HELP!!!

I cant get the cheats on half life 2 to work.
I went to options > keyboard> advanced, I have clicked on enable developer console (~).
I have pressed ~ and it doesnt bring up a console why is this?
do i need to start a new game for it to work? or is ~ the wrong key?

This might happen with azerty and certain european keyboards.

Just follow this tutorial I wrote until you get the console, then you can just leave it.

so in single player i cant open and close the box? i have to leave it there the whole time?

no, not necesarilly. You can type in : bind (the key you are going to bind the command to) "toggleconsole" (you need to INCLUDE the "")

For example : bind e "toggleconsole"

If you closed it, that button then reopens it.
