Ok, I just got my computer back from CompUSA because it was having problems. Anyway, the computer came back with 0 of my programs. All my music, pictures, videos, and HL2 were gone. I reinstalled Half Life 2, but can't play it, or CSS. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. It says it's loading and preparing to launch, but nothing happens. I have tried restarting my computer too, but that didn't work either.
Thanks for any help.
Ryan

Well, it's a Pentium 4 3.00 GHz. 384 MB of RAM. Radeon 9200 graphics card (It was enough to play a month ago and for the past year on this comp).

Well, you might not have DirectX 9.0c installed.
Go to Start --> Execute --> Type in : dxdiag
Does anything happen? Could you give us the version of DirectX?
Here's a link to it if you don't have it : Link

It comes up with the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and on the first page under system, it says my directx is version 9.0a.

Did they tell you what they did to it? I wouldn't trust someone touching my machine behind closed doors, especially a conglomerate like CompUSA.

What kind of problems were you having before you took it in?

I had to trust them lol...It was still under warranty and:

The USB ports weren't working right, my CD drive wouldn't read any discs at all, and eventually my computer just wouldn't turn on.

So they sent it back to Hewlett Packard where it was fixed, but nothing was on it when I got it back. I think they changed everything on the inside and just gave me it back with the original shell.

I'm sure you have a nice fat file in the FBI system now as well. ;)
loljk

Despite the fact I am using an HP Pavilion laptop, which is great, I advise you to not buy preassembled desktops with "warranties". No computer I've ever built has ever had a problem, while factory assembled machines always seem to have problems and they don't even come with the OS on disk. Some don't.
I just wouldn't trust them.

As far as your HL2 problem goes, it's possible you have bad hardware or your software has been tampered with. There's no way for us to know unless you give us an explicit system error or common HL2/Steam problem.

How long do you wait for it to launch? How long did it take normally?

Why do you have only 384Mb of RAM?

One stick of 128 and 256 probably. I didn't even think people manufacture 128Mbs for Ram anymore?

They could of at least told you that your HDD was being reformatted, and the reason behind it

It used to have the little loading box, and then go to the full screen loading picture with the counterstrike dudes on it. Now it just has the small loading box and then when that box goes away, nothing happens.

Sorry for my comp sucking all of a sudden. I just know the game used to work fine and now it doesn't.

Well all it is to us is a mystery. I'm completely dumfounded. Uninstall and reinstall.

No. Install the latest version of DirectX (9.0c).
Source WILL NOT WORK without it. You can find a link in my previous post.

I guess it helps to know the current version of DX. I fail at this thread. ):

I clicked the DL thing in the link Beerdude provided, waited to DL, Dled it, and installed it, but it still says my version is 9.0a. Any suggestions?

Would having Firefox as my primary browser affect it at all?

I can't even find IE on my computer, just Firefox. I DLed IE, but I can't open it, so I'm still lost on this.

Affect what at all? The game? Or Windows Update :p

Well it says I need IE running to be able to access that page and it takes me to the IE download. I DLed it but can't turn it on because I disabled it. Anyone know how to turn it back on?

lol :D
Google for the problem? (Try doing "Firefox Windows Update" or "Can't install IE". You can also keep the brackets to make Google search for that specific sentence. "I like pie" will then make Google search for the sentence "I like pie". Very handy if you are looking for a certain context ;))
