Hi,

When I installed Steam I did it to my C: drive thinking it would be a client only. Of course now my Steam folder is full of Gigs of game data, filling up my System partition.

My question is: Is it possible to point the game data to a different partition?

I figure the only way is to backup the data (using the great New Wizard), uninstall Steam, reinstall Steam from scratch in my other Partition and then restore my back up.

Anyone got a quicker way? config or registry changes?

thanks

I just copied and pasted from my C: partition to my D: one...

without ****ing up registry keys? probably not.
what u could do is backup ur Steam cache files onto CD/DVD (or wait for that Steam backup utility which Valve said would be available) and then re-install or format.. whatever it is u wanna do.

that worked? hmm...aight.. well i guess if it works.

It should work as long as you delete ClientRegistry.blob. Although, you probably won't be able to do a proper uninstall of Steam after, but that's not so much of an issue.

just move the steamapps directory over to your other partition, uninstall steam, reinstall on the other partition and put the steamapps folder back in its new place. i would reccomend not using the backup wizard for this operation because that would require compressing and then decompressing the data which would take a lot of time for either operation. just copy the files straight over, it'll take you maybe 10 minutes

Thx Yellow - I will try your suggestion. I *hate* mucking about with path-names.

I have a great utility called Filesync that compares 2 folders contents and allows you to choose the direction of syncing. I will let you know how it goes!

...and just to follow up - it worked!
So copy files to new temporary location.
Uninstall Steam.
Reinstall Steam where you want it.
Copy files to new Steam folder (not replacing newer files).

Done! thx
