changing in-game graphics problem

Well,i have been trying to get HL: Source to work on the most shitty peice of shit you can imagine...and i cant seem to change the in-game details in the advanced menu...it i will change it to what i want click ok and then the game will just shut down,leaving me with a Windows error saying that the memory could not be read.

My shitty rig:
AMD Athlon 1300+
256Megs of DDR RAM
A7V400-MX motherboard
im using the intergrated graphics atm(Im getting a new vid card and more memory in like 2 weeks)
And yes i have triede doing it with the "+map_background none" thingy
would there be any way i could change it with a console command or maybe with a hex editor and going into files?

sometimes its better to just getting it over with and buy a decent machine. No updates needed here. It's that old say "You just can't teach an old dog new tricks" Well though they can now, but you know what I mean.
