After sorting out my major stuttering and crashing problems, I have a run into another problem: My name is stuck as "[unknown]" and I can't change it. Normally I'd use the "name x" console command or the Multiplayer tab in Options, but the first one doesn't work and the second doesn't have the name field. Any help here?

Your name is the same as your Steam Community nickname.

Then there's something wrong, since it's not "Apocalypse89", as indicated by my sig...

It's a beta. It shall be fixed as I've seen several people with the same problem.

I got the same problem.

- no option in tf2 menu for playernick
- name command in console doesn't work
- changing nickname of SteamId and restarting Steam doens't work

Hope Valve will fix it soon

Try changing your SteamID nickname to something shorter or without a number. Just try different stuff like that.

Had the same problem and this fixed it for me:

You have to sign in to your friends account before starting the game.

You can also sign in during TF2 by bringing up the community menu, and sign in from there. If you do it the second way you need to change your name in the console after you sign in.

Thx, worked for me.

I love what they are doing with the Steam Community and TF2. It's like....
..
awesome.

Signing into Friends worked...except that now that game crashes whenever I look at the scoreboard or the at the end of each round, so I signed off and reverted to playing as "Unknown". Better to have a crappy name than turn the game into a crashfest(well, more than it already is).

Personally I don't like how Steam Community/Friends are tied to TF2, as they seem to destabilize it...I'd prefer them to be optional and unrelated just like any other Steam game.

Maybe something like "Save statistics" and if it's checked, it attaches to the Steam Community, if not, it's all custom name/etc, and you don't need friends and such.

There is the option "turn off Steam community in games" in steam settings. When I started playing TF2 it was turned off, but still I got my stats, then later turned it on just in case, and still got my stats and no bugs.
Try that if you haven't already, maybe ?

I always keep that setting off...works for every Steam game except TF2. And it's Friends which I'm having a problem with, not Steam Community.

I have the same issue. It took my nickname for the first few nights then on the third night it reverted me to [Unknown]. Some tool in the game said it was because a Spy on the opposing team had took it, kind of funny now that i think about it :P

I'll try signing onto friends later tonight and see if my game crashes also.

Ever since the last update, I can now view the scoreboard without crashing...except that it still crashes at the end of rounds, and since the game's become unplayable thanks to the increased frequency of game-stopping crashes, every other issue's become irrelevant.

Guess I'll have to fall back to SourceForts as my "class-based online FPS" fix until this shit gets properly sorted out.

Yeah, I tried playing windowed mode, turning off sound, etc...none of it works. The only thing that I haven't tried is updating my graphics card drivers. Sounds obvious, but I've heard that the latest Nvidia drivers are actually less stable than the older 9x.xx ones. Going to try upgrading that tonight.

EDIT: Woah...upgrading the drivers seemed to have single-handedly eliminated every major problem I've had with the game. Poo on whoever told me that older drivers would be better...
