Most of you would agree that city 17 is in russia, but i do remember black mesa is in colorado or some east North American state, (in the first hl)

black mesa east is in half life 2......

is this part of the same black mesa, or is it a black mesa facility located in the "eastern" part of the world? (russia)

City 17 has a European-styled theme to it. I don't know where you got Russia from but there is a resembalance. Anyway, everybody in City 17 speak English anyway so I don't really think City 17 is supposed to be located in Russia IMO...

in several other forums, people suggested that it was in russia, after you get off the hover boat, there is some russian writing, i myself remember seeing such writing.

Yeah, there some cyrillic - actually big bright red cyrillic - at the end of Water Hazard.

Alot of the architecural influence comes form Poland I believe. I believe the HL2 development team spent a good deal of time there. Many of the scenes in the game are reminiscent of places in Poland.

but black mesa was in colorado. black mesa east must be a different facility all together, and not part of the original black mesa

I think it was more of a 'code name' or nickname of the area rather than being connected physically or metaphysically to the original black mesa at all. Basically since Eli was from black mesa, and now worked in that area, that named it east black mesa, east being either the east end of the city or (west=black mesa colorado, black mesa east=eastern europe)

Black Mesa was in New Mexico.

City 17, however, is in Dallas, Texas. This is why.

From 2006 to 2020, a small band of traveling Polish Communists - the Fairport Pistols (a punk/irish folk fusion band) - started touring the US with their ecclectic mix of music (and often comic) stylings. The band took the nation by storm, and within a few short years America had succumbed to "Fairport Pistols Soviet Freedom Party" rule. The rest of the world, even Cuba, considered America to be "whacky-pinko-nut jobs".

Back in America however, the exciting new police state was held in high regard by both Republocrats and Nadericans alike. Architects were the first to take to the new collectivism, quickly followed by the signmaker's trade union. All buildings were quickly redesigned to look gruesomely Polish, and all signage was converted to Cyrillic. The reason you see a mix of alphabets is that the Combine Attack happened right in the middle of this "Communist Make-Over". America was so distraught at being invaded right in the middle of redecorating, that they (we) decided to just give up and "do it their way then". The French, in a lasting symbol of solidarity with the US, surrendered to Germany. Germany had no army, but decided to invade France for nostalgia's sake. This entire event is now known as the 7 Hour War.

The 7 hour war would actually have been completed in 4 minutes 37 seconds, if it weren't for a drastic miscalculation in size by the Combine. For thousands of years, the mighty Combine Armada tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming onto the first planet they came across -- which happened to be the Earth -- where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog. The next (and much bigger) Combine Armada took a shortcut and got to Earth in about 6 1/2 hours - allowing traffic - which really ticked off the surviving ships from the first Combine Armada. The large Combine Armada ate the small Combine Armada, then took over the world in 4 minutes 37 seconds.

Douglas Adams, d. 5/11/2001

The Combine quickly put a stop to any further "Communisation" as they "didn't care about any of that thank you(Breen - AP)", they just wanted to "prod ... America ... with cattlesticks" (Breen - Reuters). The sudden halt of the Communist Make-over hit our economy hard, and Saturday 16th November 2013 would become the most infamous day to never yet have been.

The stock market crashed, and in the ensuing chaos, the Gap Clothing and Petrochemicals Conglomerate collapsed, followed by the rest of the textile industry. America had a desperate shortage of Khakis, Loose cut jeans, and Advil. Only a small Louisianna based rag company survived "Black Saturday". Bubba's Wear-All Denim Jumpsuits somehow made it through the crash and ended up as the only clothing suppliers left in North America. Soon, the population would be shod exclusively in morose blue all-in-one romper suits, which is what we still see today in Half-Life 2. It is believed Bubba himself retired to Montana to raise headcrabs and '"find him a woman(AP)".

Just wanted to clear this up once and for all.

Heh. Nice. You deserve a cookie. And a Pangalactic Gargleblaster.

Actually it's Bulgaria, not Poland. Viktor Antonov - Valve's art director was born in Sofia, Bulgaria...
I know because I was born there too and the architecture is identical to what we have in Sofia. Also we use Cyrillic letters in Bulgaria.

Having the same discussion in the Easter Egg thread

I was under the impression that City 17 was a former Soviet country but not Russia itself.

Viktor Antonov, Valves Art Director, was born in Bulgaria which is where I thought C17 was based on. Also with reference to "Russian writing" being seen all over C17, the characters are actually Cyrillic and are not just used in Russia but also in Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan,
Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tatarstan and finally Viktor's birthplace Bulgaria

Bulgaria was also a part of the Roman Empire.

Bulgaria is located next to the Black Sea as well which could well have ports as seen in Hl2

$10 on it being somewhere in Bulgaria

The relevance of Bulgaria being in the Roman Empire is due to one of the Easter Eggs being "SPQR" being found on what looks like a man hole cover. It was a comman piece of grafitti found all over the Roman Empire.

cyrillic does`t mean Russian...

Cyrillic does, almost certainly, mean somewhere in the former Soviet republics, however. Cyrillic writing is simply not widely used elsewhere in the world.

As for the whole "Black Mesa East," it's a joke. Black Mesa was in New Mexico...Black Mesa East is EAST of New Mexico (VERY east...thus, the ironic humor).

This and the whole cat joke just seem to confuse the heck outta people. Why?

Eastern Europe

The textures are compiled from pictures of several Eastern European countries. There are some cyrillic lines but also other texts from countries which don't have the cyrillic alphabet. For instance the petrol stations have their prices tagged in KRONs which is the Czech currency.
Many car/trailer wrecks are Eastern German brands, e.g. Trabant P50 (http://www.team.net/www/ktud/trabi.html) or W50 (http://www.ikarus311.de/w50.htm).
And then there are the cyrillic letters (former Soviet Union/Bulgaria).
So the textures/texts/signs give no clear indication of what the nationality of the HL2 citizens might be. I think the artists just thought the look was cool - which it is :E.

HL2 looks like pictures from my childhood ;). Love that.

Matz (sorry 4 my english)

Wasn't there some longitude/latitude coordinates found a while back that pointed to a city in Eastern Europe?
