On the dark energy level when ascending the elevator at the end, if you look at the city all the lights are on as if the city was still functioning normanlly. If the city's inhabitants have mostly been killed why would they leave all the lights on? Does anyone else here agree with me?\

1. As you go through City-17, there are plenty of lights on.
2. Meh.

Street lamps. You wouldn't see house lights left, because it's a top view.

who said the cities inhabitants have all been killed? maybe theres still a bunch that are just cooperating and staying in their little tenements or whatever. and besides, combine need light too.

Exactly.

I thought this thread was going to be about the lack of street lamps and traffic lights in the city...

You do raise a good point. Maybe those aren't lights, but the glare on the rooftops from the setting sun?

Not all of the inhabitants have been killed just a large majority. I assume this because of the scarcity of citizens in the train stain and in the streets in the firstt chapter. If the combine were really that efficient wouldn't they herd the remaining people into a ghetto type of area and then demolish the vacant areas and use the raw materials or something. Also it takes a huge amount of energy to keep an entire city's lights on.
"You do raise a good point. Maybe those aren't lights, but the glare on the rooftops from the setting sun?" Rooftops do not reflect sunlight like that at dusk. I see that type of cityscape when decending in an airplane over a busy city.

Simple answer: The power hasn't been cut everywhere and half the place is probably on fire. :P

Don't tell me that HL2 being out for 6 months has reduced our Rumors and Speculation section to why LIGHTS are on. :(

Oh well, just to add something to the convo, if they were killed with the lights on, then why would the lights turn off on their own?

Even simpler answer: Valve thought it would look awe-inspiring. And it did. Looking down on the city like that is a perfect way to end your adventure; it's almost a subconcous wave goodbye. If there had been hardly any lights on, it wouldn't have looked half as impressive as it did.

This does raise an interesting point though, how many inhabitants does City 17 have?

PS. Isn't the overhead view of City 17 New York? Thought I heard that somewhere around here.

Yeah, that too.

I think I read it was st. petersburg russia, i think new york would've been too recognizable with manhatten and everything

Heh. Russians influence video games. They're bad guys in Splinter Cell, there's Petersburg in Max Payne 2 (
the officer who opens up the door to the lock-up
), Vladimir Lem in the same game, and Half-Life 2 had Gregory and Soviet Union atmosphere in a few places, including using cyrillic alphabet. Project IGI 2 took place in Russia as well. And the biggest fish in the pond - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadow of Chernobyl. It takes place in Ukraina, and NPC's will be talking Russian.

Back on topic, though.

Somewhere it mentions that the game takes place in easten europe. Is it HL2.net's story?

I have another question.... How tall is the Citadel?

There's probably no way to tell, unless it's rendered at some point in the game. The backgrounds look so realistic...

The Citadel should be at least as high as Eiffel's Tower, maybe higher, because one can see the whole city from it, and you weren't at the very top when you were looking out the "window", either.

And, welcome to the forums!

i would say it's bigger than any man made building on earth today. When you're at the top, it's the same view as if you're flying in an airplane. I would hypothesize it's at least a few miles in height

No way i've been in those tall skyscapers and this is much much taller. It at the very least triples the heght of those building. Look, the average height of a white puffy clouds is 3,500 feet. I know because i'm learn how to fly an airplane and it is around that altitude that you reach the bottom of those clouds. The tallest skyscraper is taipei 101 in taiwan which stands at 1,671 feet tall. The citadel in the game goes through the cloudline and well above it.
