I'm having problem with connecing to servers in L4D.

I can join the game lobby, but I can't connect to server. I just get that message: "Connection failed after 10 retries".

I need to try like 10 times just to start a game.

The next thing is the server browser. It just shows up to 100 servers and i can't connect even to those with low latency. Same thing happens in TF2. Its not that frustrating there though. I always play on my two favourite servers that i have no problem with connecting to.

Can someone tell me please how can I fix this?

One more thing. I am using university network. It may have something to do with this.

I am not certain, but one reason may be that the servers in question use a range of ports, if only one or two of these ports are open on your connection, then you may only be able to detect those paticular servers, the most common port with Valve games is 27015 however there are many others in use with boxes running multiple servers.

I'm not good at computers. Is there a way to open those ports for me? How can i do this?

Thats the difficult part, do you use a router to connect to your university line?, if you do it might be your routers settings, if not then it may simply be that the university blocks those ports, if that is even the problem.

If you do use a router however, this site has guides specific to ever major router brand and model, for most major game titles.

I'm pretty sure i connect through some server. I don't have the router. There is a socket where i plug the wire to connect the net.

If he's on a Uni network, how would he open those ports? I figured he wouldn't be allowed...?

Lobster's explanation sounds about right to me. It also sounds like you're in a situation where only the admin of your uni network would be in a position to help out, and I'd say the chances of them wanting to are slim.

Since some games work for you, what you could do is check the server info for those games and only join games that use the same port as that server. For instance if the IP address for one of your (working) favourites is 193.93.47.164:27015, then try to connect to some more servers ending with ':27015'. At least that would confirm whether this is the issue or not.

I was thinking more if he had a personal router between him and the Uni, but he doesnt, so like you say, its probbally blocked.

I just checked my 3 fav's in TF2. thier IP's end with either 27015 or 27025.

You are saying that i should connect to servers with IP's that end like that?

Yeah, give it a try on some other servers and see if it can connect. If it can't, we might be barking up the wrong tree entirely. If it can, then you know that your uni keeps those ports open, or opens a range which includes those ports, so it at least means you'll be able to find some L4D servers that will work for you eventually (as long as this is a port-blocking problem, which it sounds like).

hm, Just tried entering some servers with 27015 in the end. Did not work.

Any other ideas guys?

Edit:I Managed to connect to one server (27015). But one guy was being a jerk and TKing everyone so we left.

Sounds like you're okay for at least ports 27015 and 27025 anyway. Keep trying and you'll eventually find better games on better servers...

Bear in mind also that the game selection process for L4D is kind of jittery atm anyway. I fail to connect quite frequently even though I have no connection problems at all.
