After Just playing through HL again I have changed my mind from thinking that there was no world war going on to something to that extent haveing happened or is happening.
Initially I thought this should have been mentioned in the first one yet its been 5-10 years (what ever it is) scince black mesa in HL2. That being said I think the Combine were starting to come to power in HL1. The reason no one may have mentioned this could be similar to world war 2 when Americans didnt really see Hitler as an Evil or horribly person as he was taking over sudetenland and the Rhine land and not until he started killing people.
I also think the G-man primary goal is to obtain the Xen race as a military force as for future use against the Combine. (possibly similar to FDR saying we wouldnt go to war, yet preparing for it b/c he knew eventually we would have to) At the end of HL if you choose not to accept his offer you are teleported to a giant building of Xen grunt things (dudes that shoot out wasp thingys). any ways theyre lined up like theyre ready for war and such. I am assuming that after killing Nihilanth that the Xen are on your side right up to HL2. The G-man is obviously happy with what youve done because I beleive hes completed his objective. The best evidence that The xen are on the G-mans side of things is that you are teleported to this building of xen if you refuse to work for the G-man. How would the G-man be able to offer a fight you have no chance of winning unless he had the Xen ready to fight with?
