An update for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive released earlier today has introduced custom weapon finishes. Users are now able to design, create, and upload their own unique weapon skins which can be submitted to the Steam Workshop similar to hats or cosmetic items in Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2.

Unlike custom maps, which can be downloaded and played by anybody at anytime, a submitted weapon skin can only be equipped or used in-game once it has been included by Valve following sufficient quality processing and community voting. If a weapon finish is officially introduced into the game by Valve, the item creator will receive a portion of the revenue from each sale the weapon is involved in.

The Counter-Strike website has been updated to include a brand new section with a number of useful tutorials dedicated to explaining how a user should go about creating their own weapon finishes. The first tutorial discusses how players may use the "workshop_workbench" command in the game's console to access a new workbench used to view and experiment with created designs within the main client. The game update also introduced several minor new features, including several new spectator improvements, new "Eye Shielding" animations (used to demonstrate when a player is under the effects of a flash bang grenade), and updated viewmodel animations for the Fiveseven and Tec-9 pistols.

If you're looking to learn more, the Counter-Strike announcement blog post, the newly updated Steam Workshop, and the new Weapon Finishes hub should feature all the information you need. If you're still hunting for more, be sure to head on over to Cyborgmatt's patch analysis for a closer look.

Neat. More approachable than I thought it would be, I should find time to toy around with it.
