CS:S Retail, installing it at a later date

I have the retail version of the game. Helps, since I'm on dailup.

I've had HL2 installed for a while, but didn't install CS:S back at the start.

How would I go about installing it?

Extract the GCF files from the hl22.cab and hl23.cab files into my Steamapps directory, and do some renaming/funny buggery?

Run the installer, which I'm afraid of, incase it borks up my HL2/Steam install.

He's on dial-up so it would take forever to download.

i would try using the CD, i doubt it would do anything to your old game files

Well, extracting the GCFs from the CAB files and renaming them (Removing the underscores and putting a dash into counter-strike) did the trick.

Restarted Steam, started decrypting the files. And after three hours of updating the bloody game, I'm getting close to being able to play it. Hooray!

Well don't worry that will be one of the last times you have to download such a huge update, for now

Once it's done you could even play with bots which means no internet = no problem
