Hi All,

This as probably been asked before, so I apologies in advance.

Both me and my son are into deathmatch and I am toying with the idea of setting up a LAN game.
The processes I intent to follow is this. The game is installed and validated on my desktop, I intent to install it onto to my laptop and validate it through the LAN and internet connection. I am assuming that steam will allow this.
We will then come off line and my desktop will host the game. I am assuming that the laptop, when it searches for games will only see the game being hosted by the desktop.
Again, I am assuming that because I only have one disk I will have to swap this between the machines to get the game running.
I would really appreciate any pointers from anybody that as set up a LAN game or from anybody that as encounter problems in doing so.
The last thing I really want is to try this and encounter problems with the validation process or any other areas.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think you'll need another copy of the game. Or atleast another steam account. Correct me if I'm wrong though..

You won't be able to do it. You need two copies of the game and two different Steam accounts. ;( One of the many annoying things about Steam.

No you dont. You can play with a single account on a LAN connected to the net. Me and my bro do it all the time. You can even play on seperate net servers at the same time with a single account. All that will happen is it will ask you to renew your Steam Ticket(or whatever its called - entering your password again). End of story. Nothing wrong with what you have in mind as far as i can tell.

I essentially have the same set up from what i can tell. THree desktop PC's connected to a ADSL router on the net, with a four port switch. Two of which have steam with Silver package installed under the same account.

MjM is right, you don't need two copies.

Ensure that the LAN is working (gather it's setup)

Load up steam, click lan games, it'll display the game, it's really simple providing the LAN is already setup.

cheers for that .

Sorry to be a pest but i really would like a clear picture of the validation prosses before i start.
When I install the game onto the laptop, i assume I log onto steam through my exsisting account and validate the game ,yes ? and then I will register the disk I own.
Smeg, when I load up steam, if there is a network in place , steam will display LAN games ?, as at the moment there doesn't appear to be any option for this in steam.
Sorry to sound stupid, but if you guys could just clear this up I will give it a shot.
Cheers baxter

I'm at work at the moment, so this is from memory.

I downloaded hl2 via steam so i guess it's different to the cd/dvd version.

However, install hl2. login via your account/password.

once this is done, click on servers, then click on the LAN tab or "local games" tab.

That will display all games on your network.

However if both games can access the internet. The user can simply login to the game as normal, even if the user is already logged in.

I dunno what exactly you need to know, just follow the procedure that you do to play an online game, except look for the game under the LAN tab rather than the Internet tab.

To create the game, load hl2dm and click create game.
