This is probably a stupid post but I will try anyway.

I'm writing a story (un-related) to Half Life 2 but I want my stories atmosphere to resemble the feeling that of Half life 2 etc. The future... The matrix style, post apocalyptic setting etc. I was wondering if someone could describe to me how they think the atmosphere/setting is in Half Life 2. I?m a fan of the game and I?ve played Half Life 2 and Episode One. But I know there are some die hard fans out there that know all the ins and outs, settings, atmosphere of the game. Was wondering if someone could help me with describing the setting etc. Unless there is a website that goes into detail of this.

Thanks
Sean

This is not a stupid post, but it is really hard to answer your question. Perhaps the questions are a bit too abstract. We can really hard to begin to tell.
Anyway, I am not of a expert Half-Life 2 fan. For a sentence, I would describle Half-Life 2 as with "hidden turbulence amongst ostensible tranquility".

Have you played Half-Life 2? I'd still be happy to help but I think it'd be easier for you to understand if you had. I hope you'll tell us the title, sounds like a good read!

The feeling I love is the one where it's like, lets say there is some other civilization and it is superior to you, and it is after you and you only have a little on your side. Like being the rebels, not sure, I like that feeling though, like the world is after you, so hide. Get me?

edit: Thought of a good idea, lets assume you live in America. Ok, your used to living in a country where you feel protected. There is a war going on, but you get on with your daily life. Ok, now think like America is under attack and it will fall soon, think like you are one of the few rebels trying to fight to survive in America. Am I making any sense?

I have played Half Life 2 and Episode One. I just wanted other peoples opinions on how they view the setting and atmosphere for the game. It's very cool. I'm trying to write a novel or a set of short stories that connect about the future of medicine. A world where cures are suppressed and disease plagues the world. People being forced into conventional medicine, vitamins being outlawed etc.

Yea, you're making sense. Thanks

Another small thing I think can make a big difference is music, throw some good songs in the ambiance. Nothing loud and crazy, maybe a good song that people will recognize as they walk by something.

"hidden turbulence amongst ostensible tranquility".

Bingo. A rather peaceful, if not oppresive world with a secret war between Freeman and the Combine taking place in the hidden nooks and crannies of City 17...

Destroyed nightmare with dangerous creatures all around along with damn aliens running government thats peaceful? I enjoy the excellent pacing and tranquility of some areas

I like when you have to work through the bad to get to the good. Example, going through Ravenholm, the mines, then coming out of that tunnel and seeing familiar buildings and light! If you going to make it dark and scary, have a present waiting at the end for the player.

I agree. It's like your going through all these things trying to get to the other side hoping that things have changed for the better and you then you see the light. You see the beautiful sky but then you see the destruction. Then you hear Dr. Breens voice on the telescreen, someone who most? view as a savior for saving there lives, some who know the truth and your reminded of the pain he has contributed to by being in the position hes in. The game is so good.

A familiar world (especially if you've ever been to Eastern Europe) shattered and broken.

There is really not much revolting action or battle before the revolution. i.e. I mean the atmosphere before Gordon's arrival.
