How easy will it be to implement mods for hl2 into steam? I mean, for people who bought steam packages. I know retail will be C:\Program Files\Valve\Half-Life2 or something easy like that. What will the directories be for steam? Will it be more of a pain in the ass to get mods working? Will it be easier? Can anyone tell me?

As easy as it was for them to get al the origianl HL mods on steam, like HL rally, and such. just uses a slightly different exe file and installer. Probably will be encorporated into the SDK, and you use a commandline launch for the mod.

Yea thats what i mean. Cuz mods will haveta make two installers then no? One for steam, one for retail. Im afraid some mods will be like retail only. And also that steam users wont be able to play with retailers.

Retail needs steam it will install in the steam directory, it should be simple to install if they have done an installer much like installing CS1.6 for example.

yes. you are right, but almost every HL1 mod has both installers. IT really is not that big of a change, from one version to the next...look at it like regions..different installer for different languages, or content. They basically need to do that work anyway. Kinda ensures that valve can possible get some cash from royalties of products using STEAM, too

I didn't get my cd key. Is that how its supposed to be? Will I get it when hl2 is available?

You have access to CS:S already? you bought on STEAM? the cd key, if those conditions are met, are part of the UID you bought it under. You don't really need the actual key.

huh. so as long as i log in under my account i dont need a cd key?

you got it.
the use of cd keys are only to verify that you legally have a license for use of the product...like a verification # for a banking transaction. Im pretty sure that STEAM is double or triple redundant, so even if their servers went offline, they still have record.

So if i reformat, and come back and get steam. If i login, i dont need a cd key? I'll be able to dl hl2 and dod:s etc without a problem?

Yes, as soon as it is registered the product is tied to your account.

This means you could go to a friends house and play hl2 from their pc ect, you just need to log in, download the files (you dont need all of the game to start playing) and then play.
