does Valve own the copyrights to Opposing Force?

I have been wondering why it is that Valve ignored the events of Opposing Force in HL2. Not that the events of Opposing Force were crucial to understanding the story behind HL2, but it would have been nice to see at least a little reference to Adrian Shephard, or the Race X aliens. I know Opposing Force was developed by Gearbox Software -- is that why Valve made HL2, and very possibly Aftermath, completely ignoring Adrien Shephard and the Race X aliens? For all I know Gearbox owns the copyright to these characters and that's why we never heard of them again.

Though it is on STEAM i dont think valve owns the rights to it, therefore couldnt continue the story of shepard. Though it would be cool to see what that guy has been up to the past few years...

Marc Laidlaw wrote the story, and didn't come up with the characters or creatures. So I suppose they own Shephard and Race X then, but when you look at Barney from Blue Shift you can't really be sure. Unless Valve just asked Gearbox for Barney or something.

Otis the fat security guard. That's another character I would have liked to see in HL2 :)

I don't know... you only see Gordon in one game, don't you? :D

Why? I honestly don't see the point of including either Shepard, Otis or any others. Even Race X for that matter. I really hope Valve continue to ignore it.

Valve owns the rights to all the characters and storylines, if I'm not mistaken. They can do what they like with them without having to ask Gearbox for anything.

Otis was annoying. And much stupider than Barney.
Otis was a damn good shot though. He saved my ass more times than Barney did.

Race-X don't have much to do with anything. Though I would like a few gonomes.
