A new blog post on the Dota website has detailed the "Dota 2 Fantasy League Season One", which is set to begin on Monday 19th May 2014. As the name suggests, the league functions similarly to Fantasy Football, allowing groups of friends to create custom teams of professional players who will compete based on how many points they are awarded through real competitive matches. The event was previously revealed to compendium owners, who will have noticed a ticket for the league given out upon completing a purchase.
While the Fantasy Dota system was introduced during last year's International event, the feature was far more simplistic and didn't feature the ability to easily compare fantasy team scores with friends and other players. This year, however, the feature has been expanded to allow players to create their own unique Fantasy League and invite up to 9 of their friends to compete. Each player will take turns drafting professional players from an available pool before having their teams face off against one another in weekly head-to-head scenarios to see who can earn the most points.
The first season of the Dota 2 Fantasy League will run from May 19th through until July 28th, meaning the tournament will be active through several of the International 2014 qualifiers and the entirety of the main event on July 18th, providing plenty of time for a large number of professional players to get involved. To compete, players must purchase a compendium and use the ticket delivered to their Armoury. Be sure to check out the detailed FAQ over on the Dota 2 blog before competing to find out everything you'll need to know. The FAQ has also revealed that Valve plans to run Season Two shortly after the conclusion of the International, meaning we will likely see it arrive in early August.
