downloading updates

i am only using half life 2 and counter strike through dial up at the moment. The problem is before i can even play either it has to download the updates. 2 hours for half life and about 8 hours for counter strike. Is this correct. Is any other way i can get the updates without going through steam. I have access to broadband via another pc. Could i download updates to a diusing that one them install them direct.

well, in theory, if you installed steam (using your account) on this broadband-enabled-pc, downloaded all the game resources/updates, then backed it up using the backup feature in steam, and installed/copied it back over to your home pc, then you could have the updates... just a tad on the pain in the arse side of things... but you would have a backup copy then... *shrug*
