Just picked up Frank Herbet's Dune. Any fans? Any not fans?

First one's best. Gets worse and worse, only really picks up again in 6-7. Then he died. Then his son raped the series.

God Emperor was the best, I do believe. I wouldn't read after the first one though. It's not a series you appreciate on the first read.

The first book is incredible, if a bit tedious at times, but after that the series takes a bit of a strange turn.

immensely boring. I remember trying to read the first book in the waiting room for the dentist's office, and found the pattern on the carpet more interesting.

First book is a pretty straightforward story.
Prince gets kingdom taken away. Father dies. Lives in desert. Meets natives. Learns nun-chuck skills, bow staff skills. Leads uprising. Avenges father.

I loved the first book... the sequels were boring though

I like the prequels though and thought they did the series justice

I dislike Kevin J Anderson. He has tainted everything that I once enjoyed.

Actually,

his little sister avenged Leto. Remember the assault on Padishah Emperor's palace? She poisoned Vladimir.

Paul killed his nephew in HTH combat.

This novel was the shit. It was kind of like LOTR only in space. And good.
"Sing me a song from your homeworld!"

"Sing me a song of the waters of your birthworld, Usul."

Actually.

...something like that anyway.
