Personally I was disgusted with Alonso at the end of the race. He basically hid away like a child at his trailer, though you can understand his pain for having his championship taken away from him, but ***k you Alonso, dont you ***king DARE blame Petrov and Kubica in the Renaults for ''holding you up''. He never said that out loud (that Ive heard so far anyway), but he made hand gestures to Petrov as he passed him whilst slowly cruising back to the pits at the end of the race, and Petrov gestured back and almost side swiped him with, presumably, rage at Alonso's childish reaction.
Yes having a car ahead slows you down quite alot. Hamilton proved that in the last 10 laps where he was lapping 1.5 seconds quicker due to having open track infront of him finally, and Vettel had to respond, as he was holding back on lap times due to being on his last engine of the season so why risk blowing ANOTHER engine, or Hamilton would have been right behind him in the last 2 or 3 laps.
Really disgusted with Alonso's lack of sportsmanship due to his and the team's poor decision to pit to get ahead of Webber, which DID cost him the race as he fell from, what, 4th to 8th? He needed to finish 5th or above if Vettel came first in order to win the championship. It all comes down to who was the best throughout the season, and that was by far Vettel. I wasnt really rooting for Vettel at any point in the season, didnt put a finger on anyone to win, but he definitely deserved it through his consistency of being the fastest and his podiums. 19 races, he got pole in qualifying what, 10 times? Thats the mark of a deserved champion.
This season has been awesome though. Never before in F1 history have we had a potential champion out of 4 racers being decided on the final race of the season. Usually a winner is crowned in Brazil, this was a first. So many twists and turns in predictions as engines of the big guns failed, lots of big crashes, constant changing of championship leader etc.
Loved every race. Vettel won by just 4 POINTS. Wonder what the new changes next season will result in.
I agree with your criticism of Alonso, but it's hardly out of character for him. I also wouldn't describe Vettel as consistent. Of his 10 poles, he only converted 3 of them into race wins. He also hadn't led the championship at any point up until today. I'll happily admit that he's fast, but he's only really any good when he's out at the front in clear air. Drop him back a few places, and he struggles.
Definitely an awesome season, though. Roll on March.
Its been a great season, and we've got Red Bull's inability to put races to bed to thank for that. They made it really hard for themselves, whether its reliability, mistakes, public/not-so-public squabbling etc, but no doubt they deserve Constructors and Drivers Championship. Webber has improved a huge amount these last few seasons, and Vettel is very quick but inconsistent and error prone, that'll get better with age though. If Hamilton or Alonso had been in the Red Bull this year it would've been a boring year and the Championships would've been done and dusted weeks ago.
Its a shame Webber kind of dropped off these last few races - really wanted him to win it if Hamilton wasn't able too, but his confidence was shot after a season of subtle undermining and favoritism towards Vettel, and it showed. Kudos for winning the titles the right way though and resisting temptation to switch Webber and Vettel around in Brazil - that would've cost them the WDC today.
Alonso should be ashamed for the gesticulating at Petrov the way he did, who had every right to defend and did so brilliantly. That doesn't change the fact hes a brilliant driver and you cant take a storming end-of-season comeback away from him. He and Hamilton are without doubt the best two drivers in the sport, and id put Kubica right behind them (hope he gets a good drive - rumour had it he and Webber were due to switch places what with Briatore being Marks manager as well as his long standing links with Renault). Id say Vettel is next best to those 3, so he is going to have major problems defending his title next year as long as Mclaren and Ferrari close that gap a little more.
I am glad Vettel won even though I was never routing for him until this last race. I got behind him when I realized that Webber and Hamilton weren't going to pull it off.
I've never been a Ferrari Formula 1 fan. Ferrari's F1 team is nothing short of a poor sport in my eyes. And Alonso is extremely skilled, but I'm no fan. In fact, I don't even like Alonso's fans because of the black face incident last year (yes it was just one person, but it was a poor reflection on them as a whole).
Ferrari got off easy this year regarding brazenly blatant team orders, in my opinion. I recall last year with Renault, ex-F1 driver and Alonso's teamate, Nelson Piquet Jr. got a team order and crashed on purpose in Singapore to get the safety car out, which helped Alonso win. Alonso just seems to stoop to any level to win. And he seemed to intentionally spit up the concrete dust on Webber in this last race, here. I am glad to see him taken down a peg.
Regarding the end of the race incident, where Alonso held his fist up, I saw that differently than everyone else. I imagined that was a mild, somewhat friendly showing of frustration, and by no means inciting, but his comments at the end proved me wrong, I guess.
Red Bull, by a large margin, had the best car all season, and it was theirs to lose. Vettel is a sharp young driver, very talented, but inexperienced; none the less he earned the title. If not for mechanical failures, he really only made a couple of mistakes this season as far as I remember. Vettel is the most enthusiastic about winning, was always confident that he could win (even though I wasn't), and was always a good sport and welcomed the challenges. Not only that but he handled pressure better than everyone else. In my opinion, the best man won the title, and the best car won the manufacturers title.
I like Massa, but Alonso's just a douche. I would have liked Hamilton or Webber to win, but I'm not disappointed by Vettel's victory, he is an excellent driver and made some history.
