With all the new information comeing in and the lack of Half-Life 2 multiplayer information it leaves one wondering "What will Half-Life2 have for multiplayer?"

Has anyone else noticed the hints valve has been giveing us?

Dod CS and other MOD favorites are being ported to SOURCE.

CSource just to give you a idea can have maps 10 times! bigger than what they currently are, how many 6 minute rounds have you been in with 20 people that end up being 2 people waiting till the very end for the game to reset? Can you imagine what it would be like on a map 10 times bigger?

Valve has done alot of work to make the netcode as un lagged and as fast as possible. They have worked to get physics in the game but where worried that it would lag people with full physics on so they toned it down a bit, how many players where they expecting? This brings me to the whole point of this thread.

Battle Feild- 64 Players....
Joint operations- 150 players....
Counter strike maps decked out in full source that is 10 times bigger than a map that accomedates 20 people easily? Whats 20 X 10? 200? :)

My idea that i would have loved to post in the main fourm becuase its so close to what the truth must be, but alas good judgement provailed. Im not saying that it will have 200 player multiplayer becuase that would be nuts, but 64 or 128 is so possible... Please post yer ideas on this and mods if you feal that this isnt just a little theory please move it to the main fourm.

ps: I saw some information on the BIG post so i will string through it and get more stuff valve has said to support this.

Well noone has bothered to reply as of yet which means they probably dont feel the need to say what I'm about to.

Obviously CS maps WONT be that much bigger than in the original mod because of that exact problem, if anything they should make the maps a tiny bit smaller. Anyone who makes a CS map that is massive, with lots of nooks and hidey spots, has the common sense of a potato.

The only mods that would need a map so big are driving ones, flying ones.
I see no reason to think otherwise until an idea I cant imagine at the moment, comes along for a mod which requires large map sizes.

But at the moment I dont see how the maximum map size would be tested at all (in any ground combat mod)

(except for dod/war mods (ie. 99% of all mods) :P)

Aswell, I personally am not a fan of games with more than 16 (MAX) people on a server. But I would like to see a hl2 racing mod so you can race against 15 other people, and total them :p

Right, you wouldnt want 128 people on siege? Or would you... wow.... Can see the awp battle now.. lol

looks like someone got the wrong thread. (for the first thing)

:naughty: Take a look at FarCry's multiplayer, Half-Life 2 is possibly capable to do more, but atleast match what FarCry can do. HUGE maps, I don't even if it is necessary to make them big, even when there's 32 players you don't need most of the space. Most of all even with that many players, no lag at all... well atleast in the servers I play.

Gabe said mods can have whatever they want but that would require netcode editing; maybe future updates could do it for CS or DoD or something if it's heavily demanded. At the moment I'd be rather pleased with "just" 32.

I was thinking above CS like some one said dod... dod with a time limit of 6 minutes who ever has the most team left at the end wins or something like that... Tanks... Planes...

:x Seriously though I wish they would implement(Spelling?) a totally new multiplayer. I was never a fan of the whole Half-Life multiplayer mods. I'm more into the CoD, MOH:AA, and Ravenshield type FPS multiplayer feel. Hopefully though modders could make mods to my liking ;) .

man, i read in the info post that someone mailed gabe about doing a spider man mod and that it was totaly possible.. DUDE i would pay to be able to hural web at stuff and spin webs to catch things in "muggers running down a alley".

Just wanna correct one thing, Joint Operations is capable of 250 players. Yep thats right 2-5-0. With no lag problems from what I have heard.

I bet Half-Life 2 will probably support 32 or 64 players. 128 is unbelievably overkill for CS, especially with having to wait til next round. It would be such a mess and wouldn't resemble CS in any way at all, would just be blaze of bullets and bunny hopping. In CS you are suppose to work with a team, not a army. Even if the maps are able to be 10x bigger just means that when like the last 10 people are left it will last over 15 minutes til the end. I can easily see how the whole strategy is ruined with 128 people, they could just have like groups of 20 people guard a pathway and just fire non-stop having each person switch off.

The more I think about it the more I think 32 would be the best choice to have it. So what if you can play with like 100 other people, it has to be fun and enjoyable with the 100 others(Which is the case for JO).

It depends on the mod. CS, and other mods where you have to wait significant amounts of time to respawn would not work with over 32 players. But I can see how DOD, TFC etc could benefit esp. if they do implement vehicles at some stage.

update for those who are checking here im also posting it in the main fourm its big news. Especialy for us toying with mod ideas.

While the engine is setup to handle 256 players (was only 64 in HL1), I don't think you'd be successful running that many, you might be fine running 128, you'd have to test it. The reason is CPU and bandwidth. With a single server handling all of the transactions at the speed at which they need to happen, there may just simply not be enough horsepower to handle that many players.

what h-l2 is capable to handle 256 players ? wooow :O

what happens with chat in a server that big?

A scrollable chat window, that's what!

I wonder what happens with the whole server linking thing that's supposed to be possible. If you can link two or more servers together, does that mean you can have mods that run multiplayer games of 512 players or more?

if a server/map could handle 256 players that their should be a type of squad comm, where their would be 8 groups of 16, and only the "squad leaders" could talk in the general chat, and the rest of the players could only talk to their squad of 16.
