I was interested in hearing some good bands I haven't heard of.

Everyone should list some of their favorite music groups here now, and maybe add some more in another post. Try to recommend something new to someone based on what they listed.

Alter Bridge

Okay, I'm going to go through yours and roll with my usual love-to-recommend-stuff self.

If you like Modest Mouse you should check out Built to Spill - similar raw, edgy, witty and lyric-focused sounding indie from... somewhere, I forget. Anyway, pretty influential to MM I do believe which is why theres quite the relation in content but both are equally unique in their own ways. The albums Keep It Like A Secret and Perfect From Now On are stunners. This is the second time I've mentioned them so close together here but what the hell. :p

In a less technical sense, you seem to like a lot of music that draws from the straight-forward rock band element - this isn't a bad thing, don't get me wrong, I'm just using this for grounds - so off the top of my head;

Hot Water Music - Caution. Fantastic straight-up hard rock with the upbeat quirkiness of the later post-punk scene to keep you on your toes.

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary. Nothing more needs to be said about this album other than it's awesome, I reckon you'd like it.

...and for the more harder areas of rock/metal that you like, such as the early Metallica days and Suicidal Tendencies, perhaps Mastodon - Blood Mountain. A stunner from start to finish, as I'm sure just about every metal zine will agree with. A real hard-hitter, but yet it's lined in such a rich coating of detail and heart that it really stands out above more souless metal albums. You think Black Sabbath or Kirk Hammett wrote some killer riffs? Get a load of these guys - mind-blowing.

Pearl Jam
Stone Temple Pilots
Soundgarden
Bush
Nirvana
Alice In Chains
Army of Anyone
Audioslave
Everclear
Filter
Foo Fighters
Fuel
Lit
Live
Local H
Oleander
Puddle of Mudd
Temple of the Dog
Toadies
Weezer
Third Eye Blind

Thanks a lot Antipop, I really appreciate you taking the time. I'll check those bands you mentioned out, I'm sure I'll like them.

Incidentally, is there any place online where I can listen to a sample of a song, or 1 song from their album or even listen to a full album at greatly reduced quality to see if I'm interested in them without buying or stealing it?

I really love metal but too often I check out new bands who seem to just be trying to be obnoxious as a gimick.

I'm looking for some new metal bands. I've checked out Lamb of God, and I like a couple of their songs, but don't care for the majority of it. Is there any normal metal bands out there? Not looking for soft, but I'm not sure I'll like some guy sounds like he is Satan Himself 'singing' and the songs often don't even sound musical, just a bunch of fast noise.

From Lamb of God, I like, "walk with me in hell", and "blacken the cursed sun", in fact I must listen to those songs right now.

Pink Floyd
U2
Rush
Queen
The Beatles
Aerosmith
Breaking Benjamin
Nightwish
Iron Maiden
Smile
Defeeted
Nine Inch Nails
Yes
Frameshift
66 Boys
Juno Reactor

Dream Theater
Coheed and Cambria (if you like Rush)
Paul Gilbert (his instrumental stuff, the guy is god damn insane, best guitar player ever, imo)
Deep Purple
Iron Maiden (seriously, you like Metallica and never heard Iron Maiden?)
Jimi Hendrix
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Porcupine Tree (it's kind of odd music, lots of genres into one)

Oh, and good call on Rush, get their first album (RUSH) and Moving Pictures to hear their good stuff, I'd also recommend Hemispheres and Vapour Trails, too. I'd tell you to get all their albums, but I doubt you'd go that far.

By the way, they kick ass. Favorite band for me. I own all their albums including 6 live albums, and 3 concerts on DVD..
*looks at sig*
I love 'em!

Animal Collective
Bloc Party
Modest Mouse
Nine Inch Nails (bit of a guilty pleasure nowadays, considering the lyrics)
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Radiohead (possible favourite band)
Rage Against the Machine
Spoon
Sonic Youth
Soundgarden
The Arcade Fire
The Flaming Lips
The Knife (count as a group?)
The Pixies
The Smashing Pumpkins
TV on the Radio

List would have another good 10 or so entries if it included solo artists.

Trying some new bands-

I've checked out Arcade Fire - Neon Bible and Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies of the Future.

Arcade Fire is decent. It seems one of those bands that grows on you a great deal as you get used to it, which a lot of bands are for me. I'm not really totally diggin' it.

Built To Spill, I really like the first and last tracks, espeically the first track "strange"

Oh, and I'll add Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) to my favorite bands list.

I'll have to check out Iron Maiden Dogg. I have some friends that wear Iron Maiden shirts what seems like everyday, but I have to admit, I don't think I've ever heard any of their songs! They have been around for about as long as Metallica, I just haven't had any friends put me on to them, and they don't play it on the radio or anything.

Also, I do like other songs from Rush other than 2112, but not too many.

And I really don't care for the new albums from most of these classic bands that I loved like Ozzy, The Scorpions, or Rush. They just don't do anything for me.

Ozzy's new album is good, but I can't say I'm crazy about it. The singing from Rush just isn't nearly as intense, and the music seems very soft. I loathe it. As for the Scorpions, there is no one like you, rock you like a hurricane, still lovin' you, etc were way better than their new stuff.

I like a couple of songs from Megadeth, like Psychotron and Symphony of Destruction but other than that I can't get into it.

The first songs you'd want to hear from Maiden are: The Trooper, Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, 2 Minutes to Midnight, or the Wicker Man. You have to hear some of their hits first, it'll make you appreciate the rest even more when you listen.

Mastodon. There's no real way to describe the Blood Mountain album except for the fact that's it's one of my favorite albums of all time and I'm not even a huge metal fan anymore. It's just so wnderfully created it should appeal to anyone.

I think Myspace is probably your best bet for checking out bands' songs.

I like that new kid rock song called "so hot"

Checking your list, you probably already know about all of the hair bands so I can't really recommend much.

There is one band that is a little more underground. If you haven't heard of Accept, I think you will really ****ing love them.

Here are some bands that you might like judging by your list.

Definately should like
Accept
Ratt
Iron Maiden
Rolling Stones

Might like:

Slayer
Poison
Skid Row
Cinderella
Tesla

If you like NIN, you might like:

Stabbing Westward

And Blue Oyster Cult, that is one of my favorites. not sure How I missed it. I really like Franz Ferdinand too. Also like some of David Bowie's stuff and a few Radio Head songs kick so much ass, but I can't really get into most of it.

Also, Venetian Snares doesn't even resemble music in my opinion. Can't stand it. However, they have the best names for songs out of any band, hands down.

Wait, there is one song they do that I like from Venetian Snares, and that's it. They say something like "American gangster TV hijack gangster shit" through the song. It's ****ing awesome.

Oceans
Trains
Tuning between radio frequencies
Industrial machinery

Those are all groups I like.

Really Like:
King Crimson
The Pixies
Neutral Milk Hotel (yes that's right, I like NMH)
Pink Floyd
Black Sabbath
Early Syd Barret era Pink Floyd (completely different style, I always think of them as a different band)
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Sigur Ros
Miles Davis Quintet
Mike Oldfield
Frank Zappa
Cream
Brian Eno

Good, but not my favorites:
Led Zepplin
The Who
The Beatles
Bob Marley
Tool
Queen
Nirvana
ACDC
Early Aphex Twin (it's good, but it's either too creepy to listen to all the time or too dance based for me.)

Classical:
Tchaikovsky (not talking about his ballet, stuff settle down)
Beethoven
Vivaldi
Mozart
Tomaso Albinoni
JS Bach
Many others that I won't be bothered to type out.

Hot Water Music - Caution. Fantastic straight-up hard rock with the upbeat quirkiness of the later post-punk scene to keep you on your toes.

.
I took a chance and got Hot Water Music - Moonpies for Misfits, and man, this kicks ass. Thanks. The song, Where we Belong is my favorite, and the first track, Moments Pass is really good too.

Also by Hot Water Music, the song I Was on a Mountain from the album Caution is one of my favorites. They are a real hit or miss band for me. I either love their song or I don't like it at all. Same goes for Radiohead.

I checked out Mastodon, Blood Mountain and I don't really care for it. It's good, but not my thing. I may like one of their other albums though. Sometimes I like only one album from any particular artist.

oh yeah, add phenomenauts to that list. I had a pin of them, so I didn't write them on the back... then I lost the pin. Seeing them saturday at Slim's, woot woot.

Yeah, I Was On A Mountain is my favorite from Caution, but it's one of my all time most-listened to albums, too, so there ya go. Fair enough there, there's a few Hot Water Music songs out there I don't mind skipping - Moonpies For Misfits is a f'kin tune, though. Far too many good songs by that band, I'm so thankful they got back for a reunion earlier this year. Heres hoping for more!

Das cool about Mastodon. If you can handle Meshuggah (one of the best live acts I've seen, I must add) then perhaps the older Mastodon albums, Remission and Leviathan are for you. Really powerful albums - check out the songs Blood and Thunder, Iron Tusk, Sea Beast, Destroyer and March of the Fire Ants. Much more heavier and agressive than the Blood Mountain album but still really awesome. It's really the only heavy stuff I can tolerate these days.

I suppose I'd better post my own favorites up. Errr..

The Sound of Animals Fighting
Isis
Modest Mouse
Aphex Twin / Richard D. James, etc
At the Drive-In
Fear Before The March of Flames
Mogwai
Deftones
Autechre

A lot, but I'll just add those that weren't mentioned or haven't received enough love yet :)

Porcupine Tree - Easily my favorite band ever. All around amazing and varied. From metal to rock to ambient to psychedelic.

Riverside - Good progressive rock from Poland.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=dMqd7zYkQaw
