FF is off for good...

In this new update, is it me or is the Scout's Scattergun doing less damage?

I'm still getting pretty wasted off their guns while heavy/etc. So I think they still have their insane power :p

I've noticed a few other changes too... just class tweaks, that kind of thing. For one, the spy's movement speed now somewhat-matches the class he's disguised as - a bit faster as Scout, a bit slower as Soldier/Heavy. It's a nice touch.

They have always had the slower speed for the heavy/soldier/etc. They have always been the same speed if they try to go scout or something faster....because, if you think about it...who would be a scout if they could just be a spy and chose scout for the speed. Get the plus of BOTH classes. I honestly think the spy is the same as it was....and I think the changes people are seeing are just their imagination, or what they are just now realizing :p

Also, Onyxia does way more Deep Breaths since this last patch!

It's the Counterstrike Effect where, after an update where none of the weapons were altered, people claimed that the AK47/M4/knife/whatever had had their accuracy/power/recoil changed.

I don't think so. The scouts scatter gun is way to powerful it seems to me. As a heavy I've often had the buggers running circles around me. A couple of well aimed shots & I'm down. And of course they have the speed to get out of trouble quick. Scout seems a little of balance to me. In TFC they used to be almost useless in the firepower department. Scouts just relied on speed to get in & out of areas quickly, obviously making them ideal for carrying intelligence.

I've read on a few forums that some "hardcore" types have been complaining about the removal of friendly fire. I can only assume these people either play stat whore Spies or Snipers because frankly they are the classes either benefiting or least effected by it. With FF on forget being a Pyro or a HWG, you'll do more harm than good, and an engineer has even less chance to detect a spy disguised as a team mate. Glad the setting is gone, the games not meant to be realistic and quite clearly it's inclusion was a mistake. Agree that the scout needs a nerf or two.

That there is the whole point. Nothing "hardcore" about it. As it is, there is really nothing stopping people from shooting all their teammates just to be safe, so there's not much reward in playing a 'clever' spy since you're still very likely to be shot. Don't really get the statwhores comment either - surely statwhores are going to like the fact that they have less chance of dying through team damage?

Oh yeah, I remember those. So hilarious. There would be nothing changed but something that stops a cvar from being used by clients, and then everybody starts claiming they changed the registry and now they can't hit anybody! :p

So you are saying Hardcore is having FF on so you can easily take out engineers or are you saying hardcore is without FF so you actually have to play well to get past people who shoot teammates?

Because if you are wanting FF on and play a spy that sound more softcore than anything.

What?? I didn't say anything was hardcore and I barely play spy. Where did this hardcore business come from?

I don't even know where the debate about FF vs FF-off has come from. Valve have removed it because it 'breaks' TFC, not because it plays badly. It will most probably be back.

Well a truly clever spy uses both his disguise and his cloaking powers. Where one fails the other succeeds.

As you outlined earlier some engineers shoot their teammates who approach them as a way to detect spies, with FF on the engineers risking killing his own team mates, so effectively it makes getting close to engineers much easier because it nullifies their chance to detect.

It forces clever play though (from everyone, not just spies) - with FF, people approaching an engy should fire their weapon in the air or use some other means of showing that they're not a spy. I don't want to get into a protracted debate and maybe it's not the best for pub servers, but as with grenades I'm sure Valve would have gone without incorporating it from the start if they thought it had no place in TF2.

That's what I usually do when i approach an engie or something, I start firing. that way they don't waste their time/ammo me, when a spy might be uncloaking behind him,a nd he would have noticed if he wasn't shooting at me.

FF is not coming back. Don't delude yourself to that effect.

They've plainly said that they never intended to include it and simply forgot to take it out. 'It breaks the game' is not technical at all, it simply means that FF alters the gameplay in ways Valve never intended.

Think about it. From the outset, they've been controlling the servers. They never designed it to include FF and thus never bothered to mess with it. Time goes by, they forget about the fact that servers can still turn it on. They release the game, people immediately clamber for FF since they lack that notion of 'it's not meant to be.' Valve realizes they left it in and removes it. Simple as that.

I must be missing something... Have Valve really said somewhere else that they never meant to include it? You could be right about them not intending to put it back in, but I'm simply not seeing it in this simple, single line about the cvar.

Edit: Found some google hits confirming what you're saying. News to me.
