I know, its an old game... and one that divides fans throughout RPGdom as to what's the best... but damn, it even has achievements. Ok, they are crap 'progression' achievements, but still! I'm so tempted to get it... even though I still own the original PS discs...

I was genuinely surprised when I saw it pop up on Steam this morning. I knew there was a PC port made recently and, while I was never a Final Fantasy fan and I've never played VII, I know the kind of effect it had on people so it's nice to see the PC port make it to Steam.

The PC port actually came out years back (bout a year after PS I think), it just wasn't very well received cos at the time, the Playstation was actually capable of running the game better. Weird stuff like backgrounds being clearer than the PS and throwing off the foreground 3D sprites. It also had various bug fixes, that were pretty small, and the translations were clearer if I mind rightly, but with PC hardware being hit-or-miss back then, support was crap and it had a shedload of its own bugs.

I was surprised to see it on Steam, though. Even more surprised to see the achievements.

FF7 had a major impact on my youth, so I do tend to gush about it if I get the chance...

I'd happily grab it if I could play with the original PSX-quality music. Did a quick search for fixes but can't seem to turn anything up that works with this release.

Never played any of the Final Fantasy games, this one any good/can I play it without playing the others and know what's going on?

Pretty much every Final Fantasy, at least the numbered ones, take place in different universes with different characters/stories. They mostly just share mechanical similarities, like spells, monsters, some lore stuff that repeats itself through titles. So yeah, you're fine on that front.

As to whether it's good, that really depends on how much you like/can tolerate JRPGs. In other words, loads of random battles, ridiculous looking/acting characters, even more ridiculous plot, some wonky translation, etc. If you're into all that though, yeah, it's pretty great.

I was referring to the redone PC port released late last year/early this year. It was released in a few other digital game shops, so I was surprised when it didn't hit Steam.

Bad: It has unlisted 3rd party DRM.

Good: It has a cheat mode so if you don't feel like grinding you can boost your characters to max level whenever you feel like if you really want to know what Ruby Weapon's death animation is.

Awesome. I haven't got it yet as I don't have any money for a week or so, but I've downloaded that for when I get it.

I still can't believe they put in the freaking square enix client as DRM. I don't want DRM in my DRM!(yo dawg) still though at least square japan is supporting steam more, though this makes me wonder why FF15 and KH3 won't be on steam or PC considering they are 64bit. we can probably expect FF14 though once its out of beta

Now all steam needs to do is port N64, SNES, and PS2 games over and I'll be happy to have all my titles in one solid library (it's an OCD thing, leave me alone.)
