Recently, on my '88 RX7, my clutch as been slipping REALLY bad. Like, I can't really accelerate in 3rd - 5th gear without max revs and gained 10 mph....So I decided I need to get a new clutch. The guy I bought my car from has a "Centerforce dual friction clutch with a pressure plate" ...I asked if that was all I needed to take to the shop to have my clutch replaced, and he said...

eh, yeah, it'd be pretty much the entire clutch assembly. You might need to have your flywheel turned (approx. $35) and possibly a new throw out bearing (cheap.)

Does that sound about right? Or will there be things that need to be changed up? I don't know clutches, so I'm at a loss as to what goes with a "clutch kit" D;

IIRC a throw out bearing should come with most aftermarket clutches, at least that is how ACT is.

I'm at the same loss. The clutch on my car is steadily on its way out (trying to make it last to next service by driving it like a taxi)... I've looked and found clutch plates considerably cheaper than clutch kits ... but i'm not sure if its possible to just swap the plates and not the whole thing. I know if i take it to a garage they will just swap the whole thing...

... not much help but maybe someone here will be able to help us both out? :D

yes, change everything, or you will be sorry. The reason you want to get the flywheel resurfaced is to prolong the life of the Clutch. Its a NEW clutch , so it needs a new surface to contact with, so it will wear properly. The Throw out bearing is old, so get a new one.

NO!! you want to get all new. The throwout Bearing might not be bad, but it will. Id rather go under my truck ONCE and do the whole job, then Multiple times in between.

Yeah what you said makes sense. I will be getting everything changed at the service anyway, but it's not serious now. It's not slipping, it's just biting really high up... It'll last a couple of months.

Cheers

Cool, yeah, that did help! That first link you gave with the centerforce DF clutch plates, looks like the exact same thing he says he had *he said $350 he payed for them a few months back, so they are a bit cheaper now..* but I'm getting it all in a "package deal" from him sort of. He is selling me new wheels and tires and the clutch/pressure plate for 550 bucks..*not a bad deal really, I think*

So I guess I'll take him up on that, and when I ask someone to put the clutch/pressure plate in for me, to get new throwout bearings and to resurface my flywheel.

THANKS!

glad to help and that does sound like a good deal.:D

Do you have a guesstimate on how much a mechanic will charge to install those parts/resurface the flywheel/put new throwout bearings in?

that is a little tougher. But, figure about 100 dollars an hour, and the Flywheel should be a quick job. I paid 35 dollars for the Flywheel on my cummins, so I wouldnt expect more than that dollars for the flywheel resurface. So maybe 200 dollars,(but if your mech is fast you might get away with under that)? Ill try to find a better estimate, but I have never had a shop do any of that on my truck.

sorry.;(

Oh, and make sure the flywheel isnt warped, or its no good.

I never worked on a Mazda I'm a mopar man myself. But while your in there i would replace rear oil seal on engine and your trans seal. Only be about $10 more no leaks.

I figure if they see it's in horrible shape, they will let me know. I gotta call them and see if they will even install it for me, since I'm giving them teh parts to install...

I'll be getting my engine rebuilt in the next coming months *whenever I can afford the rebuild/engine port/turbo rebuild...* so I'll probably have them put new seals there too!

If you could wait and do both at same time would save a lot of money. When they rebuild the engine they will have the trans and engine apart again. So its really double labor.

I won't be able to afford all of that any time soon....and the fact that I can barely afford THIS is enough. With everything I need done to my engine, it's going to cost me a good $2-3k OR MORE...so, I really won't have any sort of clutch by the time I can afford the engine rebuild/port alone. lol.

AAHHH that was my next guess! I knew I should have replaced it!

do I nail it?

I posted that cuz everytime I see two person checking on a car the first thing I hear is "its the alternator" or something like that

Get a motorbike.

Clutch replacement on those entails opening up the crank case, taking out the clutch basket, tossing the plates, dropping new plates in, and then putting the whole shebang back into the crank case.

Edn.

Srsly though, do a berral rul.

I'd get a bike.....but I don't feel like dying QUITE yet. I know I'd get myself killed on one of them things.
