Forcing HL2 into Direct X 9 through Steam

I just need to know how to force HL2 into Direct X 9. I am going to be taking some Garrysmod screens and I would like to make them look good. I know the question has been asked about 50 akabjillion times and yes I used search but couldnt find it.

well, if your card doesn't support it, then it prolly won't do you any good.

However, go to the video options, there will be a box that says what dx you're running. You can try changing that.

My card can support it (but I only get about 15 fps with everything cranked up) I cant change it in the options I tried that, I know their is some command you can use on the properties on HL2 in steam by right clicking on it. I just don't know the command to do it.

Put mat_dxlevel 90 in the command line in launch options or in the console in game. I think this resets all your video settings though, so you have to change resolution and stuff.

mat_dxlevel 90 is if you wanna do it in game. Bare in mind this won't work too great if you're actually in a game when you do it. Just type it into the console on the main menu.
