This reminded me of the storm thread I posted where somebody said copper was stolen from the tornado sirens.

I mean **** dude, there are people cutting through live wires to get copper for a few bucks. How ****ing dumb are people, seriously?

I like how they link the whole thing to China at the start, and then tie the victims to soldiers in Iraq and the hurricane Katrina survivors. The story immediately following this is about how bad China is. ABC is just oh so subtle.
The demand for copper in places like China is driving up the prices and creating a crime wave... here!.
...two men were just charged with stealing copper that would have been used for a million rounds of ammunition for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. In New Orleans some victims of Katrina have been victimized again.

Edit: Haha, ABC got called out on their biased reporting in the China story (the one after the copper story) by someone with an actual brain. Their guest pointed out that their video of people being beaten didn't take place in China at all. Immediately after he was cut off the air.

Yeah steel prices have increased like quadruple the amount from a few years ago. Most of our steel plants are shutting down and meanwhile China keeps on wanting more steel. China puts out the most steel in the world now. They are cheap on quality though. So in reality China is eating up all of our steel making the prices soar for us. In return they give us crappy steel to work with which goes into things such as bridges, skyscrapers, etc. See where I'm going with this? Heck all metal prices are going up too. Diamond plate or the stuff that is used for treades and shiny tool boxes are sky high for that material.

Maybe we should scrap the free capitalist market and switch to communist style government control of all market goods in order to stop those dastardly Chinese from buying our steel.

recently these U.S. steel plants are coming back strong. Russia is buying them all and retrofitting them with the latest.

I read it in a business week magazine that was from somewhere around 1/2008.

Tell me about.

Two weeks ago me and my mom went up to my Grandpa's house because after he passed away, he left my mom the house. Well, we are in the process of fixing it up a little so we can sell/rent it.

We get there and we find out that someone went into the basement and stole the copper pipes, wire, and even the ground wire!!!

Cost to fix: $1000.

Then, THE VERY NEXT DAY, my sister calls me and tells me that the vacant house they have in the city next to them (her and her husband moved into a condo) got the air conditioner stolen.

I had a power outage yesterday for about 2 hours. I was reading the newspaper tonight and it said 2 teen age kids were stealing copper from the power transformer, and cut into a live wire. Needless to say, one is dead and the other is in juvenile detention....Nope, you can't make this shit up.....

Wooo! ****ing morons. I hope he enjoyed dying for a few bucks worth of copper he might have gotten.

This is from some random news article.

When they got inside July 2, they found it coming from a grisly source: a 41-year-old man who became engulfed in flames and died after cutting through a high-voltage line.

What a fun way to die.

Just wanted to clarify, when I said "Russia is buying U.S. steel mills" what I should have said was 'Russian businessmen are buying U.S. steel mills.'
