Where exactly do these "Irish" people come from...?

I've never seen anyone talk about Irish being Gaelic. We get loads of crap Gaelic TV shows on Scottish TV, even though hardly anyone here understands the damn language, including me.

I used to hate that crap when i lived up in Scotland, it is the most alien language on the face of the planet and doesn't resemble any other languages at all, apart from probably Welsh.

"oh no, let's hold onto part of our heritage by talking an alien language that no body else knows".

I like them. Although I'm English and my Scottish flatmates don't seem to enjoy them as much as me.

But yeah. Irish is a type of Gaelic. So's Welsh but the similarities between Irish and Scottish Gaelic are more apparent.
