please can someone tell me why my system stutters when lots of things are going on in half life 2 its really annoying seems to happen more when the game gets going in the later levels my system is as follows AMD 2600+ 1.9 ghz 512 DDR ram nvidia gefource fx 5200 128 mb card . i think maybe the graphics card is the prob can someone please confirm this cheers Darz

What game settings are you playing on ? E.G. DX Level, Water quality, texture detail etc etc, resolution also.

As for your system, it isn't too bad, i mean, it seems as though it should be able to run hl2 good enough for you to play it without any fps problems, however your right, the card is a little dated and an upgrade may be a wise thing to consider :)

See if you can OC your CPU 100MHz more and bring it up to 2000MHz 2GHz. If you don't know how, have a friend help you, but please don't try it without prior show-how.
I think your CPU will be able to handle that, with stock cooling.
Also you need more ram at least 512MB, so add minimum 512MB more ram into system. I think your system uses 333 (PC2700) memory chips. they're not too expensive about $40.00 try here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=627874&CatId=549.
Your video card is also out of date and you didn't mention whether it is PCI or AGP slot card, and it also lacks enough Video memory. Try and see if you can buy a better card with 256MB memory and minimum of 300MHz Core clock. Not that bad either $200.00. try here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1755110&CatId=933
Also do the disk fragment after you have installed and updated HL2.
The reason why you stuttering is that your frame rate is too low and it could be one of the reasons I have mentioned above.

Or if you have too much respect for your PC and not ready for upgrade at the moment, try setting all graphics to the minimum, and work your way up with it, see how much your system can take without loosing too much Frame rate. Also close all programs specially those which system hook Windows and boot with system by going into the task manager and into the processes and closing them.

Good Luck.

thanks for your replies guys iam trying to play the game at 1024x 768 resolution as it doesnt make any difference if i turn it down it stutters at any resolution i also have all settings ie water detail texture sound quality set to low and it dont make any difference. my fx5200 card is agp so my brother says. i have defrag my drive 3 times . seems odd that barny says i need more ram cause my mates got 512 and only 1.3ghz cpu and he says game runs fine on his system. well thanks again for advice maybe next step is 256 card cheers darz
