Garry's Mod Error : (

Every time I try to run Garry's Mod (any version) it loads fine yet when I get to the main menu it is a blank, black screen. I have searched everywhere for an answer to the problem with no luck if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

in fact its every steam powered game aside from half life 2 itself. if anyone could help or has a solution i would be grateful.
