This is quitre possible the best tweak guide on the internet, a must see for any Half-Life 2 player. It goes in depth on many various tweaks that you can use on you computer that's specific to Half-Life 2.

Use both of these and you'll have much better PC and Half-Life 2 performance.

I tried it once before, but I lost the ability to connect to the internet (because Im not sure which services control that) so I reverted to the default hardware profile.

- Indeed, XP runs SOOO many useless services in the background. Each one sounds useful from a Microsoft developer stance, but for the users it's just like, "Leave me alone. I dont use any of this stuff."
